Second-half surge falls short for Warriors against Mustangs

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Down by 19 points at halftime, the Lycoming College men's basketball team took the lead in the second half, but first-place Stevenson University was just able to hold off the surging Warriors, 79-74, in Commonwealth Conference action at Dutch Burch Court at Lamade Gym on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 19.
 
Senior Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) led the Warriors (7-7 overall, 3-5 Commonwealth), scoring 26 points and adding 11 rebounds, while fellow senior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) posted 11 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks, leaving him five shy of the school record of 142.
 
Stevenson (12-3 overall, 7-1 Commonwealth) shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the field in the game, including shooting 59 percent in the first half while building a 49-30 lead. In the second half, the Warriors held the Mustangs to 33 percent from the field while shooting 47 percent after shooting just 28 percent in the first half.
 
Down by 21 points three minutes into the second half, a tip-in by senior Justin Miller (Agawam, Mass./Bridgton Academy) signaled the start of a comeback, as Lycoming went on a 26-5 run to tie the game at 56 with 9:47 left after a jumper by junior Jourdan Wilson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). After two more ties, Wilson hit a pair of free throws with 7:42 left to give Lycoming its first lead of the half at 62-60.
 
From there, the Warriors continued to play well, as junior Malcolm Covington (Bronx, N.Y./Christ the King) and Anthony hit layups back-to-back to take a 71-67 lead as the clock ticked under five minutes. The Mustangs responded to tie it at 71 with 2:30 left and with 1:55 left, a pair of free throws by Justin Kuntz gave Stevenson a 73-72 lead.
 
With 34 seconds left, junior Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a layup. Five seconds later, though, Erik Fisher hit a transition layup to retake a 75-74 lead. Two backcourt steals helped Stevenson close out the win, notching four free throws to make up the final margin.
 
Alfonzo Hawkins led the Mustangs with 24 points and 11 rebounds and both Christian Roberts and Colby Giacubeno posted 12 points. Roberts added eight assists and Justin Kuntz posted six points and three blocks. Stefon McCray also added 10 points.
 
Before the game, Anthony was honored for becoming the 30th men's basketball player in Lycoming's history to reach 1,000 career points.
 
The Warriors wrap up the first half of the Commonwealth Conference season on Wednesday night, Jan. 22, when they host Albright at 8 p.m.
