Strong defense lifts Warriors past Widener, 72-53

CHESTER, Pa. – Holding Widener University, the top scoring team in the conference, to 53 points and 26 percent from the floor, the Lycoming College men's basketball team cruised to a 72-53 Commonwealth Conference win over host Widener, on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 11, at the Schwartz Athletic Center.
 
The Warriors (6-6 overall, 2-4 Commonwealth) were led by a double-double from senior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), who posted 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, leaving him nine shy of the school record of 142 held by Matt Stackhouse (2000-04).
 
Lycoming shot 47 percent (27-of-58) from the field and added a 14 free throws while Widener hit just 18-of-70 from the field, including a 3-of-20 effort from the 3-point line.
 
Sophomore Jourdan Wilson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added a career-high 20 points to go with six rebounds and five assists and senior Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) added 12 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Rob Pillow (Anchorage, Alaska/Robinson Secondary (Va.)) added 10 points and he canned two 3-pointers.
 
Widener (8-5 overall, 2-4 Commonwealth) held a 15-12 lead with 9:23 left before the Warriors went on a 29-11 run to end of the half, leading by as many as 16 with 1:57 left in the half after two free throws from Anthony. Wilson keyed the run with seven points and Anthony added eight points.
 
In the second half, the Pride never got closer than 13 points, while Lycoming's lead grew to as many as 23 points at 71-48 after a pair of free throws from freshman Nykolas King (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Math) with 1:22 left.
 
Senior Justin Miller (Agawam, Mass./Bridgton Academy) posted three blocked shots, as he moved into the top 10 in the school's career history in the category, while also adding 10 rebounds and two points. Lycoming dominated with 40 points in the paint while allowing just 24, also holding a 53-44 advantage on the glass.
 
Widener was led by 12 points and three rebounds from Laron Byrd. Dillon Fields added seven points six rebounds, four assists and six steals. Greg Lawson added seven points and nine rebounds and Rob McPherson also added eight points and five rebounds.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Jan. 15, when they wrap up a four-game road swing by facing Lebanon Valley in Commonwealth Conference action at 8 p.m.
