Warriors fall to Blue Jays

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) posted a match-high 12 kills and the Lycoming College volleyball team posted 17 kills in a first-set win, but Elizabethtown was able to claim the next three sets for a 3-1 (25-27, 25-22, 25-22, 25-14) win in Commonwealth Conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
 
Fink added nine digs and two aces in a breakthrough performance for the Warriors (4-5 overall, 0-2 Commonwealth). Sophomore Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) added 11 kills and two aces and senior Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) posted 10 kills, two digs and a block.
 
Senior Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) notched 45 assists and seven digs and junior Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) added 15 digs.
 
The Warriors jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set after an ace by freshman Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) and added to the lead from there, getting it to grow to 20-10 after a kill by Richardson, but Elizabethtown (6-3 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) fought back with a 15-4 run to get a set point at 25-24. A pair of kills by Richardson closed out the set in the Warriors' favor, though, 27-25.
 
The Warriors took a 19-16 lead in the second set following a block by Fink and Richardson, but the Blue Jays responded with six straight points en route to a 25-22 win. In the third set, the Blue Jays broke open a tie at 11 with a 10-4 run. The Warriors closed within two points at 23-21, but the Blue Jays got kills from Steph High and Kelci Scannapieco to close out the 25-22 win. In the fourth set, Elizabethtown started on a 17-9 run en route to the 25-14 win.
 
Abby Thrift and Juliana Mowen finished with 11 kills to lead the Blue Jays and Scannapieco added 10 kills and two blocks. Mary Clyne finished with 39 assists and 16 digs and both Mowen and Carolyn Lukiewski also added 14 digs. Samanatha Hicks also notched eight kills and two blocks.
 
The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, Sept. 14, when they host Wilkes, Baptist Bible and Penn College in a quad-match that starts at 10 a.m.
