Warriors sweep pair of matches at Scranton Invitational

SCRANTON, Pa. – Sophomore Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York Area) posted 23 kills to earn All-Tournament Team honors and senior Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) reached a milestone to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team to a sweep of a pair of matches at the Scranton Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 1, at the Long Center. Lycoming downed Sage, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-22), and followed that with a 3-1 (25-19, 28-30, 25-23, 25-18) over Scranton.
 
Gear used 14 kills during the two matches to become the 10th player in school history to reach 750 career kills for the Warriors (2-1 overall), reaching the milestone with her fourth of six kills against Sage (1-3 overall) before adding eight more kills against Scranton (2-2 overall).
 
The win over Scranton was the Warriors' first since 2009 and the first in Scranton since the 302 win in the Freedom Conference finals in 2006.
 
Richardson recorded 17 kills and hit a sizzling .481 against the Royals, helping lead the team to the 3-1 win, while freshman Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added 11 kills and four digs. Senior Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 39 assists, seven aces and six digs.
 
Junior Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) added 19 digs and four aces and senior Cortney Tice (Canton, Pa./Canton) notched 13 digs. Junior Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) also added seven kills and eight digs.
 
In the first set, a pair of kills by Seibel helped give Lycoming an 8-6 lead which it never relinquished. The Warriors built the lead to six points after a sneak attack kill by McKillop, which made it 23-17 and helped the team clinch the 25-19 win.
 
In the second set, the Warriors built a 20-12 lead after McKillop served for five straight points, but Scranton's Julia Crilly, responded by serving up nine straight points and forcing the set into extra points, where the Royals edged out the Warriors, 30-28.
 
The Warriors rebounded in the third set, though, rebounding from a 15-10 deficit as freshman Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) served for 11 straight points, giving Lycoming a 21-15 lead en route to the 25-23 set win, which was capped on a kill by freshman Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York).
 
Lycoming wrapped up the win in the fourth set by breaking open a tie at seven by going on a 12-2 run, which McKillop serving for five straight points and taking a 19-9 lead. The Warriors closed out the 25-18 win as Seibel notched the match-clinching win.
 
Against Sage, the Warriors used a balanced effort en route to the sweep, with Richardson and Gear leading the way with six kills apiece. Seibel, junior Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area) and Fink each notched five kills.
 
The Warriors broke open the first set with the score tied at 14 by scoring the next five points, starting the run on a kill by Gear. From there, the Warriors finished the set on an 11-4 run.
 
In the second set, the Warriors built a 13-10 lead before taking off, as Fink posted a kill before Gear and Sutton combined on a block to start a 12-4 run that finished the set.
 
In the final set, the Warriors again finished on a tremendous run, but this time found themselves behind 17-7 before closing the set on an 18-5 run. A kill by Jahn started the run as Tice followed by serving for four straight points. After a sideout, Whitehead served up eight straight points, including five aces, to help the Warriors clinch the win.
 
Whitehead finished with five aces and 15 digs and Seibel also added 15 digs. McKillop notched 28 assists and three aces.
 
The Warriors open the Commonwealth Conference schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 4, when they head to Messiah for a 7 p.m. match.
