SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Lycoming College softball team drilled nine hits during Tuesday, April 9’s doubleheader at Susquehanna, but the Warriors fell to the Crusader, 9-0 and 3-0, in the Cancer Awareness Cup at the Sassafras Fields on a beautiful Tuesday, April 9.
In the second game, Lycoming (10-12 overall) left three runners stranded at third base and pounded six hits out against Sarah Hoffman (6-1), but Susquehanna (19-5 overall) was able to use three single-run innings to post a 3-0 win.
Hoffman was able to leave 10 Lycoming runners stranded after allowing six hits and two walks. She struck out two and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning.
Lycoming got a solid performance in the first start of the season from sophomore
Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) (0-1), as she allowed just single runs in the first, second and fifth innings and left 13 runners stranded. She allowed six hits, three walks and just two earned runs.
Amanda Neveroski went 3-for-3 with a RBI to lead the Crusaders. Six Warriors posted a hit in the game, including senior
Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) and senior
Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area), who each went 1-for-2 with a walk.
In the first game, the Crusaders used a five-run fifth-inning and a three-hit shutout by Ashley Cole (7-2) to earn the win.
The Warriors got hits from senior
Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg), freshman
Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and freshman
Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area), but couldn’t get a runner past first base, as Cole struck out eight to earn the win.
The Crusaders used two runs in both the third and fourth to set up the five-run fifth to close out the game.
Kathryn Gilbert led the Crusaders, going 3-for-3 with a run and both Madison Clark and Bridget Rafter added two hits and two runs.
Weaver (2-1) took the loss for Lycoming, allowing 12 hits and six earned runs in five innings. She struck out three.
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 10, when they face Misericordia in a doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex at 3 p.m.
