MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – Freshman Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had a breakthrough game, notching six goals and two assists to lead the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team to a 13-5 win over Messiah College in a Commonwealth Conference game at Anderson Field on Wednesday night, April 3.
 
The Warriors (3-7 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth) dominated most of the statistical categories in the game, scooping up 36 ground balls to Messiah’s 28, and senior Matt Doherty (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) had a fantastic game on the ‘x’, winning 15-of-22 faceoffs.
 
Lycoming took charge in the second half, posting a six-goal run in a 15-minute span between the third and fourth quarters to clinch its fifth straight win over Messiah (2-6 overall, 0-2 Commonwealth).
 
With the score tied at three, junior Steve Troup (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) broke the tie with 9:12 left in the third quarter, scoring unassisted. A minute later, sophomore Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning Painted Post West) scored on a give from junior Steve Campaniello (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili).
 
As the third quarter came to a close, Cooper scored with 13 seconds left, giving Lycoming a 6-3 advantage. Just 46 seconds into the fourth, he found senior Tom Lurie (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) for a score. Cooper and Campaniello rounded out the six goal run.
 
Messiah got within four goals at 9-5 with 8:36 left, but Lycoming responded with junior Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scoring with 5:04 left and Cooper adding three more goals in the last 4:31.
 
The two teams fought to a 2-2 tie through the first quarter, while Cooper gave Lycoming a 3-2 halftime lead with his first goal with 4:01 left in the second. Messiah’s Andrew Harris tied the game with 10:52 left in the third, setting up Lycoming’s game-closing 10-2 run.
 
Doherty finished with 13 ground balls and Lurie posted two goals and an assist to lead the Warriors. Reilly and Campaniello notched a goal and assist and McCaffer posted two goals. Sophomore Trevor Williams (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) posted four ground balls and two caused turnovers to lead the defense.
 
Harris led the Falcons with three goals. Ryan Mayer added five ground balls and Cody Rogers posted four caused turnovers.
 
In net, sophomore Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) notched 13 saves to earn the win and Jon Weimer posted 10 saves for the Falcons.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, April 6, when they head to Albright in a key Commonwealth Conference clash at 1 p.m.
