WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore
Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) hit the ball just about as hard as she could and the ball took off, darting towards the outfield and looking as if the Lycoming College softball team might pull off a massive upset of Commonwealth Conference-leading Lebanon Valley, but the Flying Dutchmen’s Mary Readinger was standing right where she hit it, squeezing it and sending the game to extra innings.
Four runs later, the Dutchmen were able to secure a sweep of the Warriors, posting a 6-1 win in the opener before taking a 4-0 win in eight innings in the nightcap. Along the way, senior
Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) set the school’s career RBI record with a homer in the first game.
Senior
Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single to left and moved to second on a sac bunt, sending Lapano to the plate, where she delivered the screaming liner that Readinger snagged. A strikeout ended the inning.
In the eighth, Lebanon Valley (23-4-1 overall, 11-1 Commonwealth) used a single, a bunt single and a fielder’s choice that didn’t yield an out to load the bases. After a sac fly gave the Dutchmen the lead, Steffani Secola and Haley Neff delivered singles to bring in three more runs.
Katie Deardorff went 2-for-3 to lead the Dutchmen offensively.
Lapano (4-7) threw well for the Warriors (10-14 overall, 1-9 Commonwealth), tossing eight innings and leaving three runners stranded at third through the first seven innings. She allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out two.
Haley Neff (6-0) tossed a complete-game shutout for the Dutchmen, allowing two hits and one walk. She struck out eight.
In the first game, the Dutchmen posted 10 hits and scored in five innings and managed to leave seven Lycoming runners stranded to post a 6-1 win.
The Dutchmen scored two runs in the first, with Allie Hartman delivering a two-RBI double and added another run in the third thanks to an RBI single from Hartman.
Lycoming cut it to a two-run game in the bottom of the inning as Poorman hit a monster homer to left field to break the school’s RBI record with the 78
th of her career, as she surpassed the mark of 77 by Susan Leuthner from 1994-97.
However, single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh helped round out the scoring for Lebanon Valley, while Lycoming didn’t have a runner get past second the rest of the game.
The Warriors were led by sophomore
Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) and freshman
Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton), who each went 2-for-3. Secola went 3-for-4 and Hartman went 2-for-2 with a run and three RBI to lead the Dutchmen.
Sam Derr (15-3) tossed the complete game, allowing eight hits, two walks and one run. She struck out 10 in the win. Senior
Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) (4-5) tossed a complete game for Lycoming, allowing 10 hits and three walks. She struck out 11.
The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 16, when they host Keystone in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
