Warriors fall to Royals

MALVERN, Pa. – Junior Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored three goals to lead the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team, but a six-goal first half from the University of Scranton helped it to a 9-4 win at Malvern Prepatory School’s Quigley Field on Saturday, March 9.
 
The Royals (2-3 overall) scored three goals in each of the first two quarters to take a six goal lead before the Warriors (1-5 overall) finally got on the board when freshman Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) found McCaffer with 2:12 left in the first.
 
Lycoming kept the pressure on, scoring just 31 seconds into the second half, as McCaffer scored on a give from sophomore Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning Painted Post West). The Royals scored the next to goals to take an 8-2 lead, but Lycoming answered back with a pair of goals, as sophomore Steve Troup (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) scored unassisted and Reilly found McCaffer for his third goal with 53 seconds left in the third.
 
The Royals scored just 17 seconds later to round out the scoring, despite Lycoming firing 12 shots in the fourth quarter.
 
McCaffer led the Warriors with three goals and Reilly notched two assists. Freshman Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary’s) picked up four groundballs and caused three turnovers and senior Mike Doherty (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) also added four groundballs.
 
Taylor Nelson led the Royals with three goals and an assist and both Dillon McInerney and Will Mahle added two goals. John Gregtis added two assists and Alec Mikrut posted a goal and assist. Matt Finor won 11-of-17 faceoffs and picked up 10 ground balls.
 
Ben Worthington made 10 saves in the net for the Royals and sophomore Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) also stopped 10 shots for the Warriors.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, March 20, when they head to King’s for a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
