NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – With its first two runs in the 16th and final inning of the day, the Lycoming College softball team rallied to take a 2-1 walk-off in the bottom of the ninth inning against Mount Aloysius at the National Collegiate Sports Invitational at the Central Park Sports Complex on Wednesday, March 6. In the Warriors’ first game of the day, Mount Saint Mary’s Caitlin Maynes threw a one-hitter to lead it to a 4-0 win.

The Warriors (4-2 overall) got a brilliant pitching effort in the second game from freshman Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) (2-0), as she tossed a complete-game eight hitter, allowing one unearned run and striking out three.

Weaver got out of trouble in the second inning when senior Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) picked up her third outfield assist of the season, throwing out a Mount Aloysius runner at the plate.

She let two runners reach third in the next six innings, but each time, she was able to work out of the jam. With runners on second and third with no out in the eighth inning, she got a strikeout, a groundout with the infield drawn in and another groundout to end the inning.

In the ninth, Mount Aloysius (3-2 overall) finally broke through with a run thanks to two hits, but a flyout and pair of groundouts once again left runners at second and third.

Lycoming rallied in the bottom of the inning for the walk-off win, though, as a bunt moved Cline, who started the inning at second base, over to third. A fielder’s choice that didn’t produce an out scored Cline. Freshman pinch-runner Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) stole second and took third on a passed ball. After a flyout, freshman Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) drilled a single into left to bring in Thomas with the winning run.

Lycoming managed just three hits against the Mounties, all coming from Witmer.

Jalisa Westover, Marissa Ayers and Lindsy Sammarco led the Mounties with two hits each. Kelsey Ickes took the loss on the mount, as she walked three and struck out six in the complete game.

In the morning game, Sabrina Gondek posted three hits, a run and RBI to lead Mount St. Mary to a 4-0 win.

Senior Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) posted a first-inning hit, but that was all it could muster.

The Knights (3-2 overall) scored two runs in the first, thanks to a two-RBI single by Chelsea Hepburn. They added single tallies in the fourth and sixth innings.

Sophomore Carolina Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (1-2) took the loss for Lycoming, allowing two earned runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The Warriors wrap up the NCSI on Thursday, facing La Roche at 12 p.m. and Robert Morris-Springfield at 2:30 p.m.
