WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore
Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) tossed a five-hit shutout to lead the Lycoming College softball team to another Shangraw Athletic Complex upset of perennial Commonwealth Conference power Messiah on Thursday afternoon, March 28. The Warriors picked up the nightcap, 2-0, after falling, 10-6, in a first game slugfest.
After letting runners reach third in both the first and second innings, Lapano (3-4) retired 11 batters in a row before finally giving up a single to Courtney Allen to lead off the sixth. A sac bunt moved her to second before Brooke Pompeo singled to center, but senior
Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) threw a one-hop bullet to home to cut down Allen at the plate, preserving Lycoming’s 2-0 lead.
In the seventh, the Falcons (13-7 overall, 6-2 Commonwealth) had two runners reach with one out, but Lapano got two groundouts to end the threat and the game.
Lycoming (8-6 overall, 1-3 Commonwealth) scored the game’s only runs in the third inning, as senior
Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge Area) started the rally with a leadoff single. Senior
Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) laid down a bunt single and an errant throw put runners at second and third for Cline, who drilled a two-RBI double to left-center.
Both teams managed five hits in the game, with Mallory Rutledge allowing one earned run in six innings. She walked one and struck out four.
Lapano finished with two walks and four strikeouts in her first career shutout.
In the first game, Messiah jumped out to a 7-0 lead before staving off a Warrior rally, holding on for a 10-6 win.
Down 7-0, the Warriors scored three runs in the third inning, using two errors, an RBI double from sophomore
Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge Area) and an RBI single from sophomore
Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century).
Both teams traded three runs from there, though, as Messiah left 10 Warriors stranded to earn the win.
Pompeo went 3-for-5 with two runs, Sarah Dietrich went 3-for-5 with two runs and Becky Notte went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI to lead the Falcons.
Lycoming, which pounded out 13 hits, was led by two hits and a RBI a piece by senior
Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), freshman
Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and Allyson Marianelli. Lesser also posted two runs.
Lansberry (3-2) took the loss for Lycoming allowing nine hits and seven runs in three innings. Claressa Mees (7-0) earned the win for Messiah, allowing eight hits, two earned runs and five walks in four innings. Dietrich earned the save with three innings of relief, allowing two hits and three walks.
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 3, when they host Wilkes in a non-conference doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex at 3 p.m.
