WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior
Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) became the third player in the history of the Lycoming College softball program to homer in all four years of a career, but defending Commonwealth Conference champion Alvernia used 27 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep, 16-0 and 12-2, in Lycoming’s home opener at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Sunday, March 24.
Poorman delivered Lycoming’s only two runs of the day in the first inning of the second game, as she belted a two-out blast to left-center field after senior
Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) reached on a two-out infield single to give Lycoming (5-5 overall, 0-2 Commonwealth) a 2-1 lead.
However, in the top of the second inning, Samantha Penk delivered a grand slam for the Crusaders (13-3 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth), who scored five runs in the inning to take a 6-2 lead. Two more runs in the third and four in the fourth, as Alvernia posted 13 hits in the game, helped the team post the 12-2 run-rule shortened game.
Deanna Dungee improved to 8-0 on the season after tossing the complete game, allowing two hits and two runs. She struck out four. Sophomore
Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (1-4) took the loss for Lycoming, allowing nine hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings. She struck out two.
Lesser tied Susan Leuthner (1994-97) for second in school history with 108 career hits with her first-inning infield single. Poorman joined Tammy Shaw (1991-94) and Jessica Feerar (2000-03) as the only players at Lycoming to homer in all four years of a career. Poorman also holds the school record for career homers, as the blast on Sunday was the 12
th of her career.
Penk finished 3-for-4 with a run and four RBI and Miranda Peto went 2-for-3 with four runs and two RBI to lead the Crusaders.
The Crusaders jumped out with a three unearned runs of the second inning of the first game and added seven run third en route to the 16-0 five-inning win.
Freshman pinch-hitter
Chelsey Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) and freshman
Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) were the lone players to single for the Warriors off Brittanie Wolfe (5-3), who also walked two and struck out five in the shutout.
Briana Coan led the Crusaders, going 2-for-3 with three runs, a double and six RBI. Amanda Galanti went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI and Felicia McKenna went 2-for-2 with three runs.
Senior
Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) (2-1) took the loss for Lycoming, allowing six hits and three earned runs in 2 2/3 innings.
The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, March 26, when they host Penn College in a doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex at 3 p.m.
