McCaffer nets hat trick but Warriors fall at King’s

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) posted his fourth hat trick of the season to lead the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team, but a three-goal first quarter helped propel King’s (Pa.) to an 8-4 win at the Betzler Athletic Fields on Wednesday afternoon, March 20.
 
Freshman Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) added two assists for the Warriors (1-6 overall). The Monarchs (4-1 overall) were led by two goals each from Lenny Fox and Kieran McMahon.
 
The Monarchs scored the first five goals of the game and held Lycoming scoreless in the first half, but McCaffer scored a pair of goals in a 68-second span to cut the Monarchs lead to 5-2 with 11:01 left in the third quarter.
 
However, King’s scored the next two goals before Cooper assisted a pair of goals, the last by McCaffer with 4:30 left to make it 7-4. King’s scored with less than a minute left to round out the scoring.
 
Freshman Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary’s) picked up seven ground balls and caused two turnovers for Lycoming and senior Matt Doherty (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) added nine faceoff wins, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
 
Billy McCullough led King’s defensively, picking up three ground balls and adding three caused turnovers. Mike O’Brien added two assists and Pat Bonnot notched a goal and assist.
 
In net, sophomore Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) added 12 stops for Lycoming and Brendan McCrudden stopped 11 shots in the win for King's.
 
The Warriors get back in action on Thursday, March 28, when they host Alvernia in the Commonwealth Conference opener at the Shangraw Athletic Complex at 3:30 p.m.
