Box Score

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Making his first collegiate start, freshman William Wingate (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter) finished with a career-high 16 points and 11 rebounds, including three huge points in overtime that helped the Lycoming College men’s basketball team to an 82-76 win over Arcadia University in a battle of third-place team in the Commonwealth Conference at Alumni Gym on Saturday, Feb. 9.

“You have to fight tooth and nail to the end,” Lycoming head coach Guy Rancourt said. “I was proud of our guys. They fought hard to the very end.”

Wingate tied the game at 71 with 3:53 left in overtime with a free throw before senior Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) hit a jumper as he was fouled to give Lycoming (15-8 overall, 9-7 Commonwealth) the lead for good. After junior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) grabbed the offensive rebound, Wingate hit a jumper to give Lycoming a four-point lead.

“William played well,” Rancourt said. “The energy he brings is so important to us. Will did a great job. I was happy he was able to do it here near his hometown.”

After an Arcadia (13-10 overall, 8-8 Commonwealth) free throw made it a three-point game, sophomore Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) nailed a jumper to make it 77-72 with 58 seconds left. From there, the Warriors hit five of six free throws at the line to ice the win.

In a game with seven ties and 12 lead changes, the Warriors were able to fight back late in the game to force overtime, after a jumper from Khalief Trawick gave the Knights a 61-57 lead with 5:31 left. Dougher got the Warriors back in the game, though, hitting a jumper and then a 3-pointer to tie it at 62 with 4:18 left. After an Arcadia miss, Rudy got inside for a dunk and then a block by Martin led to a jumper on the offensive end by the guard, giving Lycoming a 68-64 lead with 2:43 left.

After each team traded buckets over the next minute, a 3-pointer from John Landro made it 68-67 with 1:26 left and then he canned another with 57 seconds left, giving Arcadia a two-point lead. The Warriors tied the game with 29 seconds left, though, as Martin hit a pair of free throws.

Arcadia had a chance to win, but Dougher came up with a steal with eight seconds left. The Warriors, however, couldn’t get a solid look before time expired on regulation.

Lycoming jumped out to an early 17-7 lead, with Wingate scoring seven points during the run, but Arcadia fought back with a 19-6 run to take a 26-23 lead with 7:35 left. The Knights were able to extend the lead to as many as seven with 1:31 left in the half, but freshman John Monkam (Lanham, Md./DuVal) scored the last three points of the half to cut the Knights’ lead to four points, 40-36, at the break.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team gaining an advantage of more than four points and the team’s fighting through eight lead changes before Martin hit his free throws with 29 seconds left to tie the game for the sixth time in the half.

Martin finished with 20 points, Wingate added 16 points and 11 rebounds and both Rudy and Dougher added 10 points. Rudy posted three rebounds and two blocks and Dougher notched five rebounds. Senior Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) posted nine points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Aaron Lee-Webb led the Knights with 21 points, seven assists and seven rebounds, Joseph Brown posted 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks and Trawick added 14 points and seven rebounds. Both Landro and McCarthy added 10 points.

Lycoming kept its hold on third place in the league with a 9-7 mark with two games left, while Messiah is a half-game back at 8-7 before its 7 p.m. game against Lebanon Valley on Saturday. In fifth-place, Arcadia is now in a three-way tie with Hood and Stevenson, who posted a one-point win over second-place Albright on Saturday.

The Warriors will now head home to get ready for a huge showdown with Albright on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. at Lamade Gym.
