Warriors fall to No. 19 Dutchmen

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. – A fast start and a defense that forced 25 turnovers helped the Lycoming College women’s basketball team hang tough with No. 19 Lebanon Valley on Wednesday night, Feb. 6, but the Flying Dutchmen were able to use a 71 percent effort at the free throw line to sneak away from LVC Gymnasium with a 62-55 win in the school’s annual Pink Game.

The Warriors (6-14 overall, 6-9 Commonwealth) fell back into a tie for the fifth and final conference playoff slot with the loss with Albright (10-12 overall, 6-9 Commonwealth), who moved up with a 60-47 win over Hood.

Lycoming now wraps up the season with a critical three-game stretch against teams currently tied or below them in the conference standings. The stretch starts when Lycoming heads to Arcadia to start the stretch on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m.

The Warriors converted 23 field goals while the Dutchmen (19-3 overall, 13-2 Commonwealth) connected on just 19, but a 22-5 advantage at the free throw line for the Dutchmen was enough to help it take the win. Meanwhile, the Warriors also forced 25 turnovers and picked up 15 steals while turning the ball over just 15 times, but Lebanon Valley held a 46-31 advantage on the boards.

Lycoming jumped out in the first two minutes with the first eight points of the game, as sophomore Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) hit back-to-back layups to highlight the run. Lebanon Valley responded, though, with a 16-5 run to take a 16-13 lead with 8:56 left in the first half.

The Warriors fought back to take the lead, as freshman Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) hit a jumper with 5:52 left in the half to make it 20-19. However, the Dutchmen were able to score the next 11 points and headed into the break with a 30-22 lead.

In the second half, the team’s played fairly even for most of the period, with Lebanon Valley taking a lead of no more than 13 points and Lycoming cutting the lead to six points once. In the final 30 seconds, Lycoming rallied within five points as Ziminski posted a steal and cruised in for a layup, but the Dutchmen closed out the win with a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left.

Junior Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals, Ziminski added 11 points and four steals and Manges added 11 points and two steals.
