ANNVILLE, Pa. – Senior
Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) broke his own single-season school record for assists, but the Lycoming College men’s basketball team fell to a hot-shooting Lebanon Valley, 84-75, in Commonwealth Conference action on Wednesday night, Feb. 6, at LVC Gymnasium.
Williams, the NCAA all divisions leader in assists, posted 11 against the Flying Dutchmen (8-14 overall, 5-10 Commonwealth), giving him 230 on the season, three more than his junior year mark of 227. The 5-11 point guard also posted five steals, moving within six of his school record of 84 set as a freshman.
However, the Warriors (14-8 overall, 8-7 Commonwealth) were overcome by the Dutchmen in the second half after holding a three-point halftime lead, as Lebanon Valley hit 25-of-32 from the line and 47 percent from the field during the game.
Lycoming held the lead for much of the first half, taking control after the Dutchmen drew within a point at 18-17 with 8:59 left, going on a 17-6 run that was capped on a layup by sophomore
Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood), making it 35-23 with 2:30 left.
However, the Dutchmen went on a 12-1 run to close back within a point with 41 seconds left before senior
Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) hit a pair of free throws with before the half to give Lycoming a 38-35 lead at the break.
The Dutchmen started the second half with 10 straight points, extending the lead to as many as 11 points at 72-61 with 7:12 left in the game. The Warriors used pressure to cut the lead down to two points at 72-70, as freshman
William Wingate (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter) hit a pair of free throws after picking up a back court steal. However, Danny Brooks posted three straight points and Lycoming couldn’t close within three points the rest of the way.
Senior
Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) posted 21 points and two blocks to lead the Warriors and Wingate added a career-high 15 points to go with five rebounds. Sophomore
Chris Foreman (Union, N.J./Union) and junior
Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) each added nine points. Rudy also posted eight rebounds and two blocks.
Kevin Agnew led the Dutchmen with 21 points and four assists and Brooks posted 19 points and nine rebounds. Joey Giangiobbe added eight assists and 14 rebounds and both Matt O’Brien and Garrett Kelly each added 12 points.
Lycoming heads to Arcadia on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 3 p.m. game that has definitive conference playoff implications, as both teams enter the game tied for third in the league with identical 8-7 records.
With three games remaining, Lycoming and Arcadia are tied for third with Messiah. Stevenson and Hood, who the Warriors face in the season finale on Feb. 16, are tied for fifth in the league, one game behind the three-way tie at third.
