Warriors fall to Knights

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning Painted Post West) posted a career-high six assists and junior Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) posted a career-high five goals to lead the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team, but a fourth quarter rally helped SUNY Geneseo take an 11-9 decision from Lycoming on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 27, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
                                   
The Warriors (0-3 overall) built a 9-3 lead into the third quarter  after McCaffer scored on a man-up goal from Reilly, their fifth connection during the game. However, the Knights (1-1 overall) scored with 1:11 left in the quarter to close within five goals.
 
In the fourth quarter, Sam Thompson scored twice for the Knights scored twice to draw the team within two points. The Knights tied the game with 4:08 left and Drew Huntington added the game-winner with 3:32 left.
 
The Knights got on the board first, but the Warriors answered on a pretty one-time goal by junior Stephen Campaniollo (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) on a pass from senior Tom Lurie (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) with 8:27 left in the first quarter. Three minutes later, Reilly found McCaffer for the first time, helping Lycoming take the lead.
 
The Knights scored the next two goals to take a 3-2 lead, but Lycoming reeled off the next seven goals, with McCaffer starting the run on a man-up goal with 10:47 left in the half and then scoring again with 4:17 left to help Lycoming take a 4-3 lead into the break.
 
Junior Jason Breau (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima), Campaniollo and Lurie mixed in goals with two more from McCaffer in the five-goal third quarter.
 
Campaniollo posted two goals and Lurie added a goal and assist. Freshman Michael Wagner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary’s) played well in the longstick midfield, notching seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior Matt Doherty (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) added five ground balls and sophomore Trevor Williams (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) notched two caused turnovers.
 
Thompson led the Knights with three goals and two assists and Andre Keating added two goals and an assist. Steven Cregan notched a goal, two assists, two caused turnovers and five ground balls. Tim Burgess added a goal, 10 ground balls and 11 face-off wins. Jeff Dunworth also picked up six ground balls and notched five caused turnovers.
 
In net, junior Andrew Hauk (Sackets Harbor, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) made 12 saves and allowed three goals in the first half. In the second half, sophomore Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) stopped four shots.

Ryan Zaremba stopped three shots in the fourth quarter to earn the win for the Knights.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, March 2, when they host Gwynedd-Marcy at 1 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
