FREDERICK, Md. – Freshman
Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) finished with 20 points and six rebounds to lead the Lycoming College women’s basketball team, but Hood College was able to rally in the last 42 seconds to post a 52-49 win in Commonwealth Conference action on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 16 at BB&T Arena.
Manges picked up a steal and drove in for a layup to give Lycoming (8-16 overall, 8-10 Commonwealth) a 48-46 lead with 56 seconds left, but Emily Maerz answered with a 3-pointer to give Hood (6-19 overall, 4-9 Commonwealth) a one-point lead with 42 seconds left. After a Lycoming miss, Dyana Prater hit the back end of a pair of free throws to make it a two-point game with 27 seconds left.
The Warriors aggressively drove the lane and forced a foul with 17 seconds left, and sophomore
Kat Andriani (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) hit the front end of her free throws to get within a point at 50-49, but Hood grabbed the ensuing rebound and Prater hit both free throws with 12 seconds left. Lycoming got a good look for three as time expired, but it fell off the rim.
The two teams fought through nine ties and seven lead changes in the back and fourth game, with neither team leading by double figures.
The Blazers started the second half on an 8-1 run to take a 30-22 lead with 16:55 left, but the Warriors responded with eighth straight points to tie the game at 30 on a trey from Manges with 14:35 left. Four minutes later, a pair of layups from junior
Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) gave Lycoming a 36-32 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Warriors kept the pressure on, as Manges hit a pair of jumpers to make it a six-point lead with 7:30 left before the Blazers fought back into the game with six straight points, tying it at 40 with 5:39 left. From there, neither team led by more than two points as they fought through four ties and three lead changes before Prater’s free throws with 12 seconds left made up the final margin.
After Manges got the first bucket of the game, the Blazers hit the next three shots to take a 6-2 lead. The Warriors responded with an 8-2 run, as sophomore
Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) canned a trey to make it 10-8 with 13:16 left. However, Hood responded by scoring nine of the next 10 points to take a 17-11 lead. With 5:08 left, sophomore
Shanley Harlacker (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) connected on a trey to tie it at 19, capping an 8-2 run.
In the last five minutes, Maerz hit a three before Lycoming closed out the half with the final bucket on a jumper by Manges with 2:58 left in the half, helping cut the lead to 22-21 at the break.
Senior
Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) led the Warriors with six assists and nine rebounds and sophomore
Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton) added eight rebounds. Antonelli finished with seven points and five rebounds and Andriani also added seven points and five rebounds to go with two steals. Harlacker hit two 3-pointers to notch six points.
Prater led the Blazers with 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Rachel Wiley notched 12 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, three blocks and two steals. Rachel Kessler added six points and nine rebounds and Maerz posted nine points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Warriors get back on the court with the opening round of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs on Monday, Feb. 18, then the No. 5 seed heads to No. 4 Elizabethtown for a 7 p.m. game.
