WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior
Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) became the eighth player in NCAA Division III history to reach 800 career assists as he posted his seventh double-double of the season, but the Lycoming College men’s basketball team fell victim to a triple-double from Albright’s Dave Singleton, as Albright posted a 90-87 win in Commonwealth Conference action on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Lamade Gym.
Williams, who entered the game eight assists shy of the milestone, posted 10 and added 12 points to lead the Warriors (15-9 overall, 9-8 Commonwealth), who finished with six players in double figures.
Singleton was a one-man wrecking crew for second-place Albright (19-5 overall, 12-5 Commonwealth), as he posted 19 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists. Kyle Jordan added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Pedro Perez added 26 points and seven rebounds.
The loss moved the Warriors into a third-place tie with 9-8 conference record with Arcadia and Messiah. Stevenson and Hood are one game back at 8-9, making Saturday’s set of games which includes Lebanon Valley at Stevenson, Lycoming at Hood, Arcadia at Widener and Alvernia at Messiah.
Lycoming took an early 8-4 lead after a 3-pointer from junior
Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville), but a layup by Perez with 11:51 left gave the Lions the lead for good. Lycoming stayed within five points until 3-pointers from Jordan and Andre Marshall sparked a 17-8 Albright run to close the half with a 51-39 lead.
The Lions got the lead to as many as 13 points with 11:04 left in the second half, but freshman
Rob Pillow IV (Anchorage, Alaska/Robinson Secondary) hit back-to-back 3-pointers to close the gap to seven points. Albright got the lead back to 11 points with 7:29 left after a trey from Perez, but Lycoming fought back, using a 19-9 run over the next seven minutes to close within a point at 88-87 when Rudy converted a layup with 18 seconds left.
Sam Marella hit a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left, though, to seal the win.
Pillow led the Warriors with 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and five rebounds and both Rudy and senior
Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) added 15 points. Rudy posted six boards and three blocks and Martin had five boards and two blocks. Freshman
William Wingate (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter) posted 10 points, five rebounds and three blocks and sophomore
Chris Foreman (Union, N.J./Union) added 10 points.
The Warriors wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 16, with a doubleheader at Hood. The women will tip at 1 p.m. before the men play at 3 p.m.
