FREDERICK, Md. – A coast-to-coast layup by freshman
Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) with 15.8 seconds left helped the Lycoming College women's basketball team finish off a 65-62 Commonwealth Conference win over Hood College on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 7, at BB&T Arena.
Â
Calella got the ball after rebounding a long 3-point attempt, taking the ball off a bounce at the free throw line and outrunning everyone the length of the court en route to the layup to break a tie at 62, helping the Warriors even their record at 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the Commonwealth. The win is Lycoming's first over Hood since the Blazers joined the conference in 2012.
Â
In a game that was marked by foul trouble for both teams, three Warriors finished with four fouls and two with three, while two Blazers (1-4 overall, 0-2 Commonwealth) fouled out and two more finished with four fouls. Lycoming struggled at the line, shooting just 15-of-24 while Hood hit 24-of-35. However, the Warriors shot 44 percent from the field and forced 31 Blazer turnovers, helping to negate the Blazers' 35 percent effort from the field and a 46-27 advantage on the glass.
Â
The Warriors had four players finish in double figures, with senior
Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) finishing with 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sophomore
Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) finished with a career-high 11 points, two assists and two steals and junior
Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) added 11 points and three steals. Junior
Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) added 10 points.
Â
The Blazers ran the floor to try to get the tying score, but an offensive foul was able to give Lycoming the ball back with 8.7 seconds left. Lycoming used a long outlet pass to Henderson to get the ball inbounds and she was fouled with 6.4 seconds left. She hit the second of her two from the charity stripe to make it a three-point game, and Lycoming was able to get the ball back with a steal and dribbled out the clock.
Â
Using a full-court press for much of the second half, Hood was able to erase a 13-point Lycoming lead that occurred after a traditional 3-point play by Antonelli started the half and made it 37-24. A layup cut the lead to eight points with 15:12 left and started a 22-11 run that was capped by another layup by Rachel Wiley with 3:40 left to give Hood its first lead of the half at 54-53.
Â
The teams traded leads twice after that, but a 3-pointer from Hood's Danni Medovich made it 60-58 and she added two more free throws with 2:12 left to make it a four-point game. Sophomore
Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) answered with 1:51 left, as she hit an 18-footer to make it a two-point game. A pair of Hood turnovers led to a tying bucket, with Manges finding Derr at the doorstep for a layup with 42.8 seconds left, tying the game at 62.
Â
In the first half, the Warriors got started slowly, falling behind 14-9 after a pair of free throws from Rachel Wiley with 10:57 left in the half, but the team responded with a 9-0 run to take an 18-14 lead after a layup by Henderson less than two minutes later.
Â
The Blazers closed within a point at 20-19 with 7:08 left, but Lycoming closed the half on a 14-5 run, using six points from Henderson during the run, as she finished the first half with a team-high nine points.
Â
Calella finished with nine points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists and Manges posted six points, a career-high six assists and five rebounds.
Â
Medovich led the Blazers with 19 points, five rebounds and three 3-pointers. Wiley notched 18 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out. Rachel Kessler added eight points and four assists.
Â
The Warriors get back on the court after final exams, facing Misericordia on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
