Warriors fall to Blazers in high-scoring affair

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. – Five Lycoming College men's basketball players finished in double figures and the team shot 50 percent from the field for the fifth time this season, but Hood College was able to hold off a late rally to post a 100-89 Commonwealth Conference win on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 7, at BB&T Arena.

Senior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) led the Warriors with 17 points, as he hit five 3-pointers in nine attempts, and senior Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) added 16 points, eight rebounds and two steals. The Warriors also got 14 points, three assists and two steals from sophomore Will Wingate (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter) and 13 points a piece from junior Jourdan Wilson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and junior Pat Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood). Wilson also added six assists as the Warriors (4-3 overall, 1-2 Commonwealth) shot 51 percent (29-for-57) from the field.

The Blazers (3-2 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth) were aided by a 36-for-46 (78.3 percent) effort at the free throw line, plus eight first-half 3-pointers and 12 fast-break points.

Down by 20 points at 60-40 with 18:32 remaining, the Warriors struggled to get into the flow in the second half, trailing by 19 with 13:04 left before a 16-4 run made it a seven-point game at 78-71 with 7:52 left after a 3-pointer from Rudy. The Warriors kept charging, with Dougher hitting a 3-pointer with 5:54 left to make it a two-point game at 81-79.

The two teams struggled to put points up over the next three minutes, with Lycoming taking one shot for the lead during a 3-2 Hood stretch that lasted  nearly 2:45 before a pair of free throws from Wilson made it 84-83 with 2:12 remaining.

However, the Blazers quickly responded, with Chris Cook hitting a pair of free throws before a pair of fastbreak buckets and another pair of free throws gave Hood a 92-83 lead with 1:13 left, just 59 seconds after it had been a one-point game. Rudy hit a 3-pointer to make it a six-point game, but that was as close as Lycoming could get.

In the first half, Dougher started the game by becoming the 13th player in school history to hit 100 3-pointers in a career. The 3-pointer marked the largest lead of the game for Lycoming and Hood erased the deficit with a 3-pointer in response. The teams fought through seven lead changes in the first 11 minutes of the game, with a 3-pointer from sophomore Armani Taylor (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bowie) giving the Warriors a 25-22 lead. The Blazers responded, though, with seven straight points and they never trailed again.

The Blazers pulled away late in the half, going on a 21-8 run in the half's final six minutes to take a 55-40 lead into the break.

Chris Cook and Cameron Cook each posted 20 points to lead the Blazers and both Asa Smith and Davon Hill notched 14 points and five rebounds. Justin Bowens added nine points and seven rebounds. Chris Cook led the team with four assists and Cameron Cool posted three steals.

The Warriors get back on the court with their last game before the holiday break, heading to Mount Aloysius for a 1 p.m. non-conference game on Saturday, Dec. 14.
