Warriors edged by McDaniel in Basinger finale

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) posted his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds to solidify his second all-tournament status of the season, but McDaniel College held the Lycoming College men's basketball team to a season-low 35.6 percent from the field en route to a 62-57 win in the fourth annual Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament Championship on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Dutch Burch Court at Lamade Gym.
 
Rudy also added four assists, a block and a steal in the contest and senior Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) posted 13 points and nine rebounds to move within three points of becoming the 30th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points.
 
Junior Jourdan Wilson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added nine points and two assists and sophomore Eric Ishman (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) posted seven points and two rebounds. Both senior Justin Miller (Agawam, Mass./Bridgton Academy) and freshman Andy Abreu (Claridge, Pa./Penn-Trafford) added two blocks for the Warriors (5-4 overall).
 
The Green Terror (6-3 overall) took control in the final 10 minutes of the game, using a fastbreak dunk by tournament MVP Phillip Perry with 6:15 left to start 10-5 run  that was finished by a pair of free throws from Duane Echols with 3:50 left, giving it a 58-48 lead.
 
The Warriors responded with a 7-1 run to cut the lead to 59-55 lead with 55 seconds left, but Lycoming couldn't cut the lead to one possession as McDaniel hit 3-of-4 from the line to ice the game.
 
In the first half, McDaniel started on a 12-4 run, but Lycoming scored seven in a row to spark a 12-3 run to take the lead at 16-15. Late in the half, the Warriors took their largest lead of the game at four points after a free throw from Rudy before a McDaniel layup made it a 28-26 game at the half.
 
In the second half, the teams fought through nine lead changes before a 3-pointer from Echols gave McDaniel the lead for good at 40-38 with 10:58 left.
 
The Green Terror was led by 16 points, two rebounds and two assists from Perry and 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists from Echols. Jimmy Cranwell added nine points and Tim Stewart posted eight points and three rebounds. Wesley Brooks led the team with eight rebounds.
 
McDaniel shot 43 percent from the field while Lycoming hit a season-low 21-of-59 (35.6 percent). Lycoming did hold a 32-24 advantage in the paint and a 41-36 advantage on the glass. The Warriors also held a 17-15 advantage in points off turnover and 15-9 on second-chance points.
 
In the tournament consolation game, Misericordia picked up a 72-54 win over the University of New England.
 
The Warriors get back on the court with an important Commonwealth Conference matchup on Saturday, Jan. 4, when they head to Arcadia for a 1 p.m. game.
