Warriors roll to Basinger Tournament title game with 75-51 win

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A 6-for-12 effort from the third-best 3-point shooting team in the nation to go along with 20 fastbreak points and 26 points off turnover helped the Lycoming College men's basketball team roll to a 75-51 win over the University of New England in the opening round of the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament on Monday night, Dec. 30, at Dutch Burch Court at Lamade Gym.
 
The Warriors (5-3 overall) advance to their fourth straight Basinger Tournament title game, where they will face McDaniel (6-3 overall), which beat Misericordia (3-5 overall), 58-50, in the other first round game. The championship tilt is set for 3 p.m. at Lamade Gym on Tuesday, Dec. 31, while New England (1-7 overall) faces Misericordia in the consolation at 1 p.m.
 
Lycoming again shot well, firing 52 percent (28-of-54) from the field and was able to clear off the bench, with 12 players factoring into the scoring column in the game. Senior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) led the way with 13 points and four blocks, as he hit all three of his shots beyond the arc and both senior Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) and senior Justin Miller (Agawam, Mass./Bridgton Academy) added 10 points. Miller also added six rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore Rob Pillow (Anchorage, Alaska/Robinson Secondary (Va.)) posted nine points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals and junior Pat Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) added eight points.
 
The Nor'Easters responded to an opening 6-0 Warrior run by scoring seven straight points, but the 7-6 lead was New England's last, as Rudy hit a 3-pointer with 15:21 left to start a 15-5 run that helped Lycoming take a 21-12 lead with 8:58 left. A layup by Miller with 4:23 left in the half gave Lycoming its first double-digit lead, which it never lost, as it took a 34-21 lead into the break.
 
In the second half, Lycoming continued to play well, as the lead swelled to 20 points on a dunk by Rudy with 15:02 left and grew to as many as 25 with 8:33 left before New England cut it down to 19 with 4:03 left. However, Lycoming finished the game on a 10-5 run to make up the final 24-point margin.
 
The Nor'Easters were led by 11 points and five rebounds from Brayden Morse and seven points and eight rebounds from Jesse Dykstra. Devin Thompson added five points and four assists and Justin Pollard posted six points.
 
The Warriors held a 34-22 advantage in points in the paint, 26-6 in points off turnover and 20-2 off the break. The Nor'Easters were held to just 32 percent (20-for-63) from the field.
