Warriors comeback to down Misericordia, 65-59

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The third double-double of the season from senior Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) and career-highs of seven assists from sophomore Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) and six points from freshman Rachel Miller (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) helped lift the Lycoming College women's basketball team to a 65-59 win over Misericordia University in non-conference action on Sunday, Dec. 15.
 
Antonelli finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, helping her move into the top 10 in school history in career points, moving past Jennifer Shuler (1995-99) to finish the game with 925 points. She also moved into the top five in school history in career rebounds, moving past Annette Weller (1991-96), finishing the game with 579.
 
Manges finished with 12 points and a career-high seven assists, as the sophomore also hit two huge 3-pointers in the final four minutes to help seal the win for the Warriors (4-3 overall). Miller scored six points, hitting two 3-pointers during a 10-3 run that helped Lycoming take an early second-period lead.
 
A 7-2 run helped Misericordia (4-3 overall) take a 42-41 lead with 11:38 left after an old-fashioned 3-point play by Lauren Smicherko. Lycoming responded with four straight points, as Antonelli and sophomore Victoria Siebecker (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona) scored. The Warriors expanded the lead to eight points after a layup by freshman Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./KIttatinny Regional) and a jumper by sophomore Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) made it 52-44.
 
The Cougars fought back with an 8-2 run to close within two points with 4:09 left after a fastbreak layup by Hannah Seely. After a Lycoming timeout, Manges hit a huge 3-pointer to make it a five-point lead with 3:40 left and after a Cougar bucket, she drilled another one to make it 60-54 with 2:59 left. The teams traded a bucket each in the next 1:30, with Derr giving Lycoming a 62-56 lead.
 
Misericordia couldn't get back within five points from there until Sam Baro hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds left. The Warriors closed out the win, though, when junior Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) scored on a fastbreak layup after a steal with 15 seconds left.
 
The Warriors tied the game two minutes into the second half with a layup by junior Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area). After an exchange of buckets, the Cougars scored four in a row before Lycoming answered with five points, with a 3-pointer from Miller giving Lycoming a 34-33 lead, its first of the half with 15:07 left. After an exchange of buckets, Miller canned another 3-pointer with 13:20 left, helping the Warriors take a 39-35 lead.
 
After Misericordia opened the game with an 8-0 run, the Warriors ignited on their own 13-3 run to take a 13-11 lead after a jumper by Manges with 10:20 left in the opening half. Manges led the Warriors during the run, while Antonelli added four.
 
The Cougars took the lead back when Sam Baro hit a 3-pointer and scored the next nine points before a layup by Antonelli cut the lead to 20-15 with 6:17 left. Just over a minute later, the Warriors tied the game, as junior Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) hit a 3-pointer with 4:49 left, as Manges assisted on all three buckets during an 8-0 run that was capped by a free throw from Calella.
 
Misericordia retook the lead with a 7-2 run, but Lycoming closed within two points with 1:25 left on a layup by Antonelli to make it 27-25 at halftime.
 
Derr finished with 10 points and five rebounds and Henderson and Calella each added six points for the Warriors, as Lycoming shot 39 percent (26-of-66) from the field, but hit 46 percent (6-for-13) from 3-point range and forced six more turnovers, plus grabbed five more offensive rebounds to help comeback for the win.
 
Sam Baro led the Cougars with 16 points and five rebounds and Hannah Seely added 14 points and eight rebounds. Smicherko added 12 points, four rebounds and two steals.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Sunday, Dec. 29, when they host Anna Maria in the first round of the Hoops for Hounds Tournament at Dutch Burch Court at Lamade Gym at 5 p.m.
