Warrior bench scores 51 in 91-77 win over Rutgers-Camden

Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Career highs that equaled 34 points from three players off the bench helped ensure a 91-77 win for the Lycoming College men's basketball team against Rutgers-Camden in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 1, at Dutch Burch Court at Lamade Gymnasium.

Sophomore John Monkam (Lanham, Md./DuVal) led the bench with a career-high 15 points, as the forward hit 5-of-7 from the field and all five free throw attempts. Sophomore Armani Taylor (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bowi) added a career-high 11 points, four assists and two steals and freshman Andy Abreu (Claridge, Pa./Penn-Trafford) posted eight points and a block, helping lead the Warriors (4-1 overall), who shot 55 percent (32-for-58) from the field in the game.

Sophomore Will Wingate (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter) added 14 points and four rebounds and freshman Eric Ishman (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) added three points and two rebounds, rounding out the bench's 51 points.

"I'm happy with our bench production," Lycoming head coach Guy Rancourt said. "We were able to play some guys (Sunday) that have been in the program for a year and they finally stepped to the forefront in Eric Ishman, Armani Taylor and John Monkam. They just did a great job."

The Warriors iced the game after the Scarlet Raptors (1-3 overall) drew within five points with 4:04 left at 76-71. A timeout by the Warriors was followed by a 3-pointer from senior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) on a give by junior Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) as the shot clock wound under five seconds. Rutgers-Camden got a shot off on the ensuing possession, but after the rebound, junior Jordan Wilson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) picked up a seal and found Rudy for an emphatic dunk.

After another pair of missed shots by the Raptors, the Warriors again got on the break with Wilson finding senior Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) for a reverse layup to make it 83-71 with 2:49 left. The Raptors never drew back within single digits.

The Raptors took an early 8-4 lead before the Warriors scored the next six points, with Wilson hitting a jumper with 13:43 left to take a 10-8 lead. It was the last time the Warriors trailed in the game. They led by as many as nine in the first half, after the first bucket by Abreu made it 23-14 with 9:07 remaining, but the Raptors fought all the way back to tie it at 28 with 4:28 after a layup by John Tatem.

A free throw from Dougher gave Lycoming the lead back and they did not relinquish it the rest of the half, with a traditional 3-point play from Taylor sending the team to the locker room with a 41-37 lead.

In the opening moments of the second half, the Raptors tied the game four times but could not take a lead. With the score tied at 53 with 13:45 left, Monkam started a seven-point Warrior run with a jumper before Wingate hit a trey and Monkam capped the run with a fastbreak layup on a dish from Jordan.

The Raptors cut the lead down to three, but Lycoming responded with a 13-6 run, capped by another trey from Wingate on a give by Rudy. Rutgers-Camden made one last run as the clock ticked under five minutes, scoring six straight points, the last on a layup by Alex Smart, setting up Lycoming's final run.

Anthony finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and Rudy added 10 points, eight rebounds, a career-high five assists and four blocks. Wilson finished with four points, five assists and three rebounds and Dougher added seven points, four rebounds and three assists.

Rutgers-Camden was led by 23 points from Marcus Taylor and 22 points and eight rebounds from Teon Russell. Shaliek Johnson added six points, 14 rebounds and four steals and Smart posted 16 points and four rebounds.

The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Dec. 4, when they head to Alvernia, who is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com poll, for a rematch of the 2013 Commonwealth Conference Championship game at 8 p.m.
