Warriors fall to Blue Jays in conference tournament

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The fifth-seeded Lycoming College volleyball team made several valiant comebacks throughout the match, but the fourth-seed Elizabethtown College was able to post a 3-1 (27-25, 25-15, 24-26, 25-20) win in the opening round of the Commonwealth Conference Tournament on Monday night, Nov. 4.
 
The Warriors (25-11 overall) came back from an 18-14 deficit in the first set to tie it at 20 before a pair of aces made it 22-20. With the score 23-21, a kill by freshman Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) and an ace from senior Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) tied the set. After a pair of sideouts, Elizabethtown (18-15 overall) was able to get two points, one on a kill by Samantha Hicks and one on an ace to take the 27-25 win.
 
In the second set, the Blue Jays ran out to a 19-9 lead en route to the 25-15 win. The Warriors fought back in the third set from a 17-9 deficit when sophomore Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) served up seven straight points during a run punctuated by three blocks from junior Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area). Down 21-16, junior Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) served up six straight points to tie the set at 22. With the score tied at 24, Richardson notched a kill and a Blue Jay attack error extended the match to the fourth set.
 
Lycoming fell behind 17-9 again in the third set, but closed the gap to within five points several times before closing within four at 24-20 when senior Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) notched a kill. However, a kill from Megan McNaul ended the set.
 
Richardson, Gear and freshman Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each posted 12 kills. Jahn also posted 11 digs for a double-double. Slawson also posted 10 kills, as Lycoming posted 52 kills, three more than Elizabethtown in the match.
 
McKillop posted 49 assists, three aces and nine digs and Whitehead posted 13 digs. Gear and Sutton each had three blocks. Junior Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) also added 11 digs.
 
Kelci Scannapieco and Mowen led the Blue Jays with 10 kills, while Scannapieco also added 10 blocks. Steph High posted 22 assists and three aces and Mary Clyne added 20 assists and nine digs. McNaul notched eight kills, nine aces and 12 digs.  Carolyn Lukiewski led the team with 18 digs.
 
Elizabethtown advances to the Commonwealth Conference semifinal, where it will face top-seeded Stevenson on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
