WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A frantic comeback from 14 points down to make it a one-possession game with 1:38 remaining fell short for the Lycoming College women's basketball team on Tuesday evening, Nov. 19, as King's College was able to notch a narrow 69-66 win at Dutch Burch Court at Lamade Gym in non-conference action.
Â
Four Warriors (1-2 overall) finished in double figures, led by 13 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks from junior
Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) and 14 points and six assists from freshman
Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional). Sophomore
Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) added 13 points and four assists and senior
Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) added 12 points and five rebounds.
Â
The Warriors drew within two points on an inside layup from sophomore
Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) with 8:46, completing a run of eight straight points. From there, the Monarchs (2-1 overall) got the lead back to seven, but a jumper from Calella brought the Warriors back within two points with 4:13 left. Each time the Warriors drew back within two points, the Monarchs would answer.
Â
However, with 1:38 left, a pair of free throws from Manges made it 62-60 and 20 seconds later, a missed layup was rebounded by Antonelli, but a turnover in the backcourt helped the Monarchs score the next four points and take control. Lycoming cut the final margin down to three points as Manges hit two shots in the final four seconds.
Â
The Monarchs began to take control in the final 10 minutes of the first half, breaking a tie at 11 by posting a 15-3 run to take a 26-14 lead with 3:42 left before keeping that margin at halftime, 30-18.
Â
A layup to start the second half helped the Monarchs get the lead to 14 points and they held a 41-28 lead with 12:19 left before Lycoming started a 14-3 run that was capped by the layup from Henderson.
Â
Marissa Manning posted 20 points and four rebounds and Jennifer Fabian posted 11 points and five rebounds. Kasey Seitz posted four assists and Shanley Harlacker added two steals. Ashley Davies led the team with eight rebounds.
Â
The game was a tale of two halves for the Warriors, who shot 26 percent in the first half before shooting 50 percent in the second half and outscoring the Monarchs, 48-39.
Â
The Warriors get back on the court on Tuesday, Nov. 26, when they begin the Commonwealth Conference season by facing Elizabethtown at 6 p.m. at Dutch Burch Court at Lamade Gym.
