Warriors rally past John Jay for Dutch Burch Tip-Off title, 104-98

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Five Lycoming College men's basketball players finished in double figures and the team used a 13-5 run in a four-minute span in the second half to post a 104-98 win over John Jay in the championship game of the 16th annual Dutch Burch Tip-Off at newly-dedicated Dutch Burch Court at Lamade Gym on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 16.
 
Before the game, the college dedicated Dutch Burch Court, the playing surface of the Warriors' home at Lamade Gym, in a pregame ceremony filled with former basketball players and the family of the legendary Coach Burch, who roamed the sidelines at Lycoming for 32 years, winning 318 games from 1962-94.
 
The Warriors (2-0 overall) were led by 26 points, seven rebounds and three blocks from senior Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy), as he moved within a point of 900 in his career, helping him earn tournament MVP honors. The Warriors won their 11th Dutch Burch Tip-Off title and defeated John Jay (1-1 overall) in a tournament title game for the second straight year, also beating the Bloodhounds, 100-72, in the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament finals in 2012.
 
Senior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) also earned a slot on the all-tournament team after posting 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Senior Justin Miller (Agawam, Mass./Bridgton Academy) posted 16 points and six boards and sophomore William Wingate (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter) posted 16 points and eight rebounds.
 
Once again, posts dominated the game for the Warriors, notching 65 points on 22-of-34 (64.7 percent) from the field. The team also took advantage of 51 free throws, scoring 33 points while holding John Jay to just 26 shots from the line.
 
Junior Jourdan Wilson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) posted seven points, six rebounds and eight assists and junior Malcolm Covington (Bronx, N.Y./Christ the King), who added six points and five assists.
 
With the score 71-69 with 12:50 left in the second half, the Warriors rallied when sophomore John Monkam (Lanham, Md./DuVal) hit a layup to start a 13-5 run that was capped by five straight points from Wingate that helped Lycoming take an 84-74 lead with 8:34 left.
 
John Jay cut the lead to seven once with 7:28 left, but a jumper by junior Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) got the lead back into double figures less than a minute later, where it stayed until there was 1:19 left. The Bloodhounds finished the game on a 10-5 run, helping round out the 104-96 win.
 
The Warriors jumped out to a 15-6 lead before John Jay rallied back to tie the game at 17 with 12:36 left, sending the first half onto a pendulum, complete with 10 ties and eight lead changes. John Jay built a nine-point lead with 6:50 left in the half, but the Warriors rallied back with nine straight points, as Rudy capped the run with a dunk to tie it at 38. Lycoming got the final bucket in the half to take a two-point lead into the break, as Miller hit a mid-range jumper.
 
In the second half, the team's fought through three more ties in opening six minutes before Lycoming took the lead for good on a pair of free throws with 14:30 left from Covington.
 
Dougher finished with 11 points, as Lycoming had five players score in double figures. The team shot 61 percent (34-for-56) from the field, while John Jay hit just 40 percent (35-of-88).
 
Korede Griffith earned a slot on the all-tournament team by posting 29 points and seven steals for the Bloodhounds. Kris Owens posted 23 points and 13 rebounds and Darell Robinson added 18 points and six assists.
 
The Warriors get back on Dutch Burch Court at Lamade Gym on Tuesday, Nov. 19, when they host rival Susquehanna at 8 p.m.
