Warriors split on last day at Houghton Invitational

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Senior Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) posted 23 kills and hit .423 to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team on the second day of the Houghton Invtitational on Saturday, Oct. 26, as the team fell to Mich.-Dearborn, 3-1 (16-25, 26-24, 25-10, 25-23) and defeated SUNY Canton (25-14, 25-22, 25-22).
 
Along the way, senior Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) reached the 4,000-career assist mark, becoming the second in school history to reach the milestone, with her sixth of 43 helpers against Mich.-Dearborn.
 
Against SUNY Canton (27-5 overall), the Warriors(23-10 overall) were led by 10 kills from sophomore Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) and nine kills from sophomore Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley), whole Gear posted eight kills, seven digs and seven blocks. Junior Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda) added four blocks.
 
Jahn led the team defensively with 20 digs, while McKillop, senior Cortney Tice (Canton, Pa./Canotn), junior Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and junior Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayett) each added 10.
 
The Warriors snapped a five-match winning streak for the Kangaroos and gave Lycoming its 23rd win, the most since the 2003 team went 24-11 in 2003.
 
Morgan Bills led the team with nine kills and Mackenzie Mynter added 31 assists. Robyn Carroll posted 12 digs.
 
Against Mich. Dearborn (7-26 overall), the Warriors took the first set, but not converting on three match points in the second set swung momentum and helped Mich.-Dearborn post the win.
 
Gear notched 15 kills, five digs and four blocks and McKillop added 43 assists and 17 digs. Defensively, Sutton posted three blocks, Seibel posted 30 digs and junior Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) added 19 digs and three assists. Freshman Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) added 11 kills and 22 digs.
 
Danielle Campbell posted 13 kills and four blocks and Jessica Spiegelberg added seven kills and six blocks. Danielle Horvath posted 16 digs and both Sabrina Garmo and Nia Martin added nine kills.
 
The Warriors wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 3 p.m. with a tri-match at Pitt-Bradford. The team faces Penn State Altoona at 3 p.m. followed by Pitt-Bradford at 5 p.m.
