Warriors fall to Dutchmen

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A double-double from junior Kevin Anthony (Atlanta, Ga./Bridgton Academy) and senior Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) posted 19 assists for the Lycoming College men’s basketball team were not enough on Wednesday night, Jan. 9, but Commonwealth Conference foe Lebanon Valley was able to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit to take a 90-86 decision at Lamade Gym.
 
The Warriors (11-3 overall, 5-2 Commonwealth) were led by Anthony, who posted 21 points, 12 rebounds and two steals. Williams notched six points, 19 assists and three steals, as he posted the second-most assists in school history, falling two shy of his record of 21 set against Mount Aloysius in 2011.
 
Sophomore Pat Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) notched a career-high 18 points and senior Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) added 13 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Senior Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) added 12 points and six rebounds.
 
Lebanon Valley (6-8 overall, 3-4 Commonwealth) shot 73 percent (19-of-26) in the second half to help post the comeback, while Lycoming shot 34 percent.
 
Down 53-40 with 18:17 left, the Dutchmen scored eight straight points to make it 53-48 just over a minute later. Lycoming got the lead back to nine points with 12:40 left, and held a 69-60 lead with 11:21 left, but an 11-2 run tied the game with 7:54 left. The Warriors still managed to stay in the driver’s seat for much of the next four minutes, with a pair of free throws from Davis giving the Warriors an 83-79 lead with 3:08 left. However, a 3-pointer from LVC’s Matt O’Brien with 1:34 left gave them a one-point lead and the Warriors couldn’t score again until Davis hit a 3-pointer with six seconds left.
 
The Dutchmen took a seven-point lead early in the first half, but Lycoming responded with a 19-2 run, as Williams capped the run with a fastbreak layup that made it 30-20 with 6:37 left. The Warriors got the lead to as many as 13 points and headed into the break with a 46-35 lead.
 
Danny Brooks led the Dutchmen with 28 points and 13 rebounds and O’Brien posted 26 points and 10 assists. Kevin Agnew notched 15 points and nine assists.
 
The Warriors outrebounded the Dutchmen, 49-42, and held a 23-14 advantage in turnovers, but shot 34 percent from the field, as they took 32 more shots in the game than the Dutchmen (89-57).
 
The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, Jan. 12, when they head to Stevenson for a 4 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game.
