Davis reaches 1,000, but Warriors comeback at Widener falls short

CHESTER, Pa. – Senior Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) became the 29th player in the history of the Lycoming College men’s basketball program to reach 1,000 career points, but Widener University was able to use a hot-shooting performance to post an 86-78 win in Commonwealth Conference action at the Schwartz Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 5.
 
Davis, who needed four points in the game to reach the 1,000-point mark, scored 14 for the Warriors (11-2 overall, 5-1 Commonwealth), crossing the mark on a rather fitting fastbreak layup on a give by senior Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensberg) with 10:47 left in the first half.
 
Senior Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) finished with a career-high 29 points, as he hit 11-of-19 from the field and added 7-of-11 from the line. He also added a block and a steal.
 
The Warriors kept a one-game lead in the Commonwealth Conference standings, thanks to Elizabethtown’s 73-63 upset of Albright. Widener moved into a tie for fifth with Messiah with a 4-9 overall mark and a 3-3 mark in the league.
 
Both teams struggled early in the game, fighting to a tie at 11 with 12:36 left in the first half, but Widener took control soon after, using nine straight points to take a 28-17 lead with 6:46 left. A 3-pointer by Dillon Fields with 55 seconds left helped the Pride take a 15-point lead and they headed into the break with the score 40-25.
 
In the second half, the Warriors made a couple runs in the first five minutes of the game to get whittle the lead to 11 points, but with 10 minutes left in the half, the Pride had an 18-point lead. The Warriors rallied late, scoring six straight points to cut the lead to eight points at 78-70 with 1:44 left. Lycoming continued to whittle the lead down over the next minute, getting it to five points at 82-77 after a pair of free throws from Davis with 33 seconds left.
 
However, Widener hit 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch to close out the win.
 
Sophomore Chris Foreman (Union, N.J./Union) posted 12 points and Williams posted four points, five rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
 
Widener, which shot 52 percent (30-of-58) from the field and hit eight 3-pointers while holding the Warriors to two treys, was led by 25 points and six 3-pointers from Rodney Brown. Dillon Fields posted 15 points and Andrew Radomicki added 12 points. Both players had five assists. Adam Aheran added 13 points and Bob Makor posted 12.
 
The Warriors get back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 9, when they host Lebanon Valley in another important Commonwealth Conference matchup at 8 p.m.
