Warriors fall to No. 11 Messiah

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – Freshman Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) led the Lycoming College women’s basketball team with 12 points, but an aggressive No. 11 Messiah was able to take 20 more shots from the field, translating it into a 58-32 Commonwealth Conference win at Brubaker Auditorium on Wednesday night, Jan. 30.
 
With the loss, the Warriors (5-14 overall, 5-8 Commonwealth) fell into a tie for fifth place in the conference standings with Albright (9-11 overall, 5-8 Commonwealth), which posted a 68-45 win over Alvernia. Both teams have five conference tilts remaining.
 
Manges also added five rebounds to go with her fourth double-figure effort of the season. Junior Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) added six points and senior Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) added two assists, two steals and five rebounds. Sophomore Ali Derr (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) added four points and four rebounds.
 
Messiah jumped out in the first half with a 21-0 run and never looked back. The Warriors closed the gap to 16 points at halftime, as Manges hit a 3-pointer as time expired on the first half to make it 30-14. Lycoming trimmed the lead to 15 points early in the second half, but couldn’t get any closer
 
Dori Gyori led the Falcons (17-2 overall, 11-1 Commonwealth) with 13 points and nine rebounds and both Nicky Hess and Chelsea Danel added 10 points. Kira Maier posted eight points, six steals and 10 rebounds and Taylor Miller notched nine points and six assists.
 
The Warriors now head home to Lamade Gym to face Stevenson, which is one game behind the Warriors in the conference standings, in a critical Commonwealth Conference game on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m.
