Warriors fall to King’s

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) and sophomore Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) combined for 31 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Lycoming College women’s basketball team, but 2012 NCAA Division III Sweet 16 team King’s (Pa.) was able to overcome a second-half deficit and take a 71-66 decision at Scandlon Gymnasium on Thursday, Jan. 3.
 
Antonelli posted 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals to lead the Warriors (2-9 overall), while Derr had a breakthrough game, notching a season-high 15 points and six rebounds.
 
The Warriors took the lead with a 9-5 run to open the second half, as freshman Shannon Wheeler (Cranford, N.J./Linden)hit a 3-pointer to give Lycoming a 38-35 lead with 16:43 left.
 
The Monarchs (6-4 overall) used a 15-4 run over the next six minutes, though, to take control of the game. The Warriors stormed back to get the lead within two points twice in the final 6:18, but couldn’t get any closer.
 
The Warriors rallied furiously after the Monarchs took a 64-56 lead with 2:51 left. The Warriors got a layup from Derr, a jumper by freshman Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York), a 3-pointer from senior Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and a free throw from Antonelli to pull within two at 66-64 with 49 seconds left. The Monarchs hit one free throw to take a 3-point lead and a steal by Katlin Michaels on the ensuing Warrior possession helped ice the game, as King’s hit its final four free throws.
 
After the teams fought out to a tie at six, the Monarchs scored the next six points to take a 12-6 lead with 11:23 left. The Warriors responded, though, as Manges hit a 3-pointer, igniting a 15-2 run that was capped by a pair of free throws from Antonelli with 6:47 left, giving Lycoming a 21-14 left.
 
The Monarchs got right back in the game with nine points in the next 105 seconds to retake the lead during a run in which it scored 14 straight points. Lycoming responded, again, though, closing the half on an 8-2 run, with Derr hitting a layup to make it 30-29 in King’s favor at halftime.
 
Manges finished with nine points and six rebounds and Wheeler added eight points and five assists in her first start in six games. Freshman Shanley Harlacker (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) hit two 3-pointers and added four assists and two steals and Scheller also canned two treys and added three assists.
 
King’s was led by 17 points, six steals, seven rebounds and four assists by Michaels and 14 points and four rebounds from Ashley Davies. Celia Rader posted 10 points and three assists.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 5, when they get back on the court at 1 p.m. for a Commonwealth Conference game against Widener.
