Warriors fall to Pride

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College women’s basketball team hit 10 3-pointers, its most in a game since 2010, but Widener University used a 46 percent effort from the floor to post an 80-59 win in Commonwealth Conference action at the Lamade Gym on Saturday, Jan. 26.
 
Senior Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) posted 11 points, three 3-pointers, three assists and two steals and freshman Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) added 11 points, a career-high tying seven rebounds and two 3-pointers to lead the Warriors (5-13 overall, 5-7 Commonwealth). Freshman Taylor Ford (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) also hit two 3-pointers, as Lycoming hit 10 its most in a game since making 11 against Misericordia on Nov. 23, 2010.
 
Widener (15-4 overall, 10-2 Commonwealth) was led by 15 points and five rebounds from Lil Carney and 12 points each from Coutney Colella and Brianna Wylie off the bench, as the Warriors’ bench was outscored for just the third time this year, 43-28.
 
Lycoming jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first 1:35, as Scheller canned a 3-pointer and sophomore Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) connected on a fastbreak layup. However, Widener responded with eight straight points and never lost the lead again.
 
Widener got the lead to 11 points with 10:23 left in the first half before Lycoming worked back into the game, with freshman Shanley Harlacker (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) connecting on a three and freshman Shannon Wheeler (Cranford, N.J./Linden) hitting a jumper to start an 8-1 run that brought Lycoming within four points at 19-15.
 
The Pride went on a 12-0 run and closed the half with a 35-18 advantage. In the second half, Widener shot 55 percent from the field, building the lead to 28 points in the first 10 minutes of the half thanks to a 26-15 run. Lycoming got the lead down to 19 points late in the half thanks to four Warrior treys in the final nine minutes.
 
Wheeler posted nine points, two assists and two steals and Ford posted seven points. Junior Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) and freshman Victoria Siebecker (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) each posted six points.
 
Kate Dellinger notched six points, 13 rebounds and five assists for the Pride. Jennifer Egee and Vanessa Hejnas posted nine points a piece and Hejnas and Carney each posted three steals.
 
The Warriors hit the road on Wednesday, Jan. 30, when they take on No. 5 Messiah in Mechanicsburg, Pa., at 6 p.m.
