Williams’ triple-double lifts Warriors past Pride, 88-71

Box Score

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) provided the second triple-double in the Commonwealth Conference this year, posting 11 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds to pace the Lycoming College men’s basketball team to an 88-71 win over Widener University on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 26, at Lamade Gym.

The win, meanwhile, boosted Lycoming (13-6 overall, 7-5 Commonwealth) back to a three-way tie for third in the Commonwealth Conference with Messiah and Arcadia, halting a three-game stretch in which the team dropped games by five points or less.

Williams was one of five Warriors to finish in double figures, as junior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) led the team with 20 points, 13 in the first half, five rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore Chris Foreman (Union, N.J./Union), senior Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) and freshman William Wingate (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter) each added 10 points.

Both teams shot 47 percent in the game, but Lycoming used a 20-for-23 effort from the free throw line to be able to pull away, as the Pride (5-14 overall, 4-8 Commonwealth) hit just 7-of-18.

Lycoming started slowly, falling behind 11-6 before scoring seven straight points. The Pride got the lead back to four points with 10:17 left in the first half, but Lycoming responded with 11 straight points, as Williams found sophomore Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood), who drilled a fastbreak 3-pointer to cap the run. The Pride answered with a 3-pointer, but the Warriors continued to press, with junior Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) capping a run of six straight points to make it 32-22 with 5:15 left.

The Warriors didn’t let the Pride back within six points and a pair of free throws from senior John Ryan Wolff (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) gave Lycoming a 40-28 lead at the break.

Lycoming opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 50-31 lead with 16:21 left. Widener responded, getting back into the game with a 15-1 run in the next six minutes to close within 51-46. However, Martin, who left the game in the first half after taking an elbow to the face, reentered the game and began to get the Warriors’ offense restarted, hitting three jumpers in a row and pouring in 10 points in a four-minute span, hitting his last bucket on a jumper on the break with 6:10 left to give Lycoming a 68-52 lead.

The Pride never got back within 14 points while the Warrior offense continued to roll, with Williams crossing 10 assists with 4:11 left on a dish for a 3-pointer by Foreman. He had reached 10 rebounds first, grabbing an offensive board with 5:27 left during a play sequence in which Dougher scored and then he closed out his first career triple-double when he stepped back to hit a jumper with 1:14 left as the shot clock wound down on a possession, giving Lycoming an 85-65 lead.

Anthony finished with nine points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals and Dougher added eight points and two 3-pointers for Lycoming.

Dillon Fields led the Pride with 25 points and five 3-pointers. Bob Makor added 11 points and five rebounds and Andrew Radomicki posted six points, seven rebounds and six assists.

The Warriors hit the road on Wednesday, Jan. 30, when they take on Messiah, who are tied with the Warriors in third place in the conference, in Mechanicsburg, Pa., at 8 p.m.
