Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) led the Lycoming College women’s basketball team with 15 points, none bigger than her last two on a layup with 10 seconds left, to lead it to a 54-52 win at Albright in Commonwealth Conference action in the Bollman Center on Wednesday night, Jan. 16.
Lycoming and Albright fought through two ties in the final three minutes, but after a layup from senior
Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) tied the game at 52 with 2:26, the teams locked down on defense before Antonelli got open for her game-winning layup with 10 seconds left.
Down by seven points with 9:16 left, the Warriors rallied back, with Scheller hitting a layup to start a 10-2 run that helped Lycoming take the lead, 48-47, after a layup from Antonelli with 4:03 left.
The teams fought through three lead changes and a tie in the first 3:37 before Albright took the lead, but weren’t able to get a lead of more than four points. The Warriors tied the game at 38, but the Lions fought back with seven straight points to take a 45-38 lead, setting up the Warriors’ comeback.
After Albright scored the first bucket, the Warriors responded by scoring nine straight points, with Antonelli scoring four points to lead the team during the run. The team continued to put the pressure on, taking a 22-11 lead after freshman
Shannon Wheeler (Cranford, N.J./Linden) hit a 3-pointer with 7:57 left. The Lions, however, closed the gap, using the last eight minutes of the half to go on a 12-2 run to make it 24-23 at the break.
Antonelli led the Warriors with 15 points and eight rebounds, also adding two steals, and Wheeler posted 11 points and two assists. Scheller posted seven points, seven rebounds and two steals and freshman
Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) added seven points and four steals.
Sophomore
Ali Derr (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) posted six points, five rebounds and two blocks and sophomore
Kat Andriani (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) also added six points and two steals.
The Warriors were outshot 45 percent to 33 percent and Albright had a 37-34 lead on the glass, but Lycoming forced 23 turnovers which led to 20 points.
Kelecia Harris led the Lions with 22 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks and Jessica Venturelli added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Kari Ludy posted nine assists and Tara Sabotchicki notched three blocks.
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 19, when they head home to Lamade Gym for an important 1 p.m. Commonwealth Conference clash with Elizabethtown.
