Warriors fall to Lions

READING, Pa. – Senior Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) posted 28 points and sophomore Chris Foreman (Union, N.J./Union) added a career-high 21, but the Lycoming College men’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a hot-shooting Albright, falling 83-78, in Commonwealth Conference action on Wednesday night, Jan. 16, at the Bollman Center.
 
With the win, the Lions (13-3 overall, 6-3 Commonwealth) moved into a tie for second place in the conference with the Warriors (12-4 overall, 6-3 Commonwealth). Alvernia took over first by half-a-game with a 72-65 win over Arcadia, as they improved to 6-2 in the league.
 
Martin posted 28 points, hitting 12 field goals, six rebounds and two blocks while Foreman notched 21 points, hitting three 3-pointers in the game.
 
The Lions had a six-point lead early in the second half, but Lycoming scored eight straight points to take a 44-42 lead with 17:06 left. From there, the team’s fought through eight lead changes and five ties in the ensuing nine minutes before a jumper by Zach Benjamin gave the Lions a 66-65 lead with 8:16 left, starting a run of nine straight points by Albright.
 
Lycoming closed within four points four times in the waning minutes, but couldn’t get any closer and Albright was able to close out the win with two shots by Dave Singleton and one by Cornell Mickens.
 
In the first half, the Lions jumped out to a 22-14 lead through the first 10 minutes, but the Warriors stayed hot on their heals, as a 3-pointer from sophomore Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) cut the lead to five and started a run of nine straight points. From there, the teams traded leads and buckets, with neither team posting a lead of more than four points.
 
As the half came to a close, senior Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) hit a jumper with four seconds left to make it a one-point game, but Singleton hit a 3-pointer with one second left to give Albright a 38-34 lead at the break.
 
Davis added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists and Dougher notched eight points and two 3-pointers.
 
Singleton led the Lions with 25 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Pedro Perez notched 16 points, Kyle Jordan posted 13 points and five rebounds and Sam Marrella notched 11 points and six assists.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 19, when they head home to Lamade Gym for an important 3 p.m. Commonwealth Conference clash with Elizabethtown.
