Warriors outlast Mustangs, 104-100, in overtime

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A 13-6 run to open overtime helped the Lycoming College men’s basketball team outlast Stevenson University, 104-100, sustaining a late rally to regain a solo hold on first place in Commonwealth Conference action on Saturday evening, Jan. 12.
 
The Warriors (12-3 overall, 6-2 Commonwealth) retook the lead in the Commonwealth Conference after Albright fell to Lebanon Valley, 77-67, but Alvernia sits just a ½ game back at 5-2 in the league, and both Albright and Arcadia are one game back at 5-3.
 
Lycoming withstood a late rally from Stevenson (8-6 overall, 2-6 Commonwealth). After the Warriors took a 102-95 lead after four straight free throws from senior Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg), the Mustangs came right back, as Andrew Bishop hit a layup and then forced a steal and Christian Roberts hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left to make it a two-point game. With three seconds left, though, Williams hit his fifth and sixth free throws in the last minute of the game to close it out.
 
The Mustangs got the first point in overtime, but the Warriors hit five straight, spurred on by a steal and fastbreak layup from Williams with 3:35 left.
 
Lycoming led in regulation from nearly wire-to-wire, as Stevenson tied the game at 14 with 10:38 left before the Warriors rolled out on a 20-7 run in the next five minutes to take a 34-21 lead with 6:30 left. The Warriors kept the pedal down, taking a 49-32 lead into the break.
 
In the second half, the Mustangs made a run to get the lead to two points with 15:00 left, but the Warriors regained control and took a 77-59 lead with 6:09 left after a pair of free throws from senior Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) after a Stevenson technical foul.
 
Stevenson rallied furiously, though, going on a 30-12 run to close the game, including hitting a 3-pointer from Brett Burrier with 21 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
 
Martin led the Warriors with 26 points and five blocks and both junior Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) and Williams posted double-doubles. Anthony notched 21 points and 10 rebounds and Williams notched 12 points, eight assists and three steals. Freshman Rob Pillow IV (Anchorage, Alaska/Robinson Secondary) added 14 points.
 
Sophomore Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and junior Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville) each ahd eight points.
 
Roberts led the Mustangs with 29 points and three steals and Alfonzo Hawkins added 23 points, five assists and three steals. Burrier added 18 points and six rebounds and Stefon McCray posted 14 points, four assists and four rebounds.
 
The Warriors will now get set for a big game on Wednesday, Jan. 16, when they head to third-place Albright, which is just one game behind the Warriors in the Commonwealth Conference, for an 8 p.m. game.
