CARLISLE, Pa. – It took five sets in each case, but the Lycoming College volleyball team ended two long droughts against in-state rivals on Friday, Sept. 7, at the Dickinson Invitational, beating York (Pa.) for the first time since 2005 in the first match, 3-2 (25-12, 25-21, 22-25, 13-25, 15-11), before beating Dickinson for the first time since 1996 in the second match, 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 16-25, 25-18, 15-12).
Thanks to a hot-hitting fifth set in which the Warriors notched eight kills on 21 attempts, the Warriors were able to overcome a comeback attempt from York (Pa.) and hold on for a 3-2 (25-12, 25-21, 22-25, 13-25, 15-11) win to open the invitational. It was Lycoming’s first win over the Spartans (1-5 overall) since 2005.
The team used a balanced attack in the final set, with two kills each coming from freshman
Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York Area), sophomore
Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda) and senior
Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area), as it hit .333 overall in the set while York hit just .200 and had three hitting errors.
Richardson led the Warriors with 13 kills, three aces and six digs and eight kills each from Oliva and junior
Chelsee Strine (South Boardman, Mich./Forest Area). Junior
Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 37 assists and seven digs. Sophomore
Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) added 13 digs and sophomore
Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) added 11.
Melissa Patterson led the Spartans with 11 kills and four blocks and both Kristin Martinak and Alison Dorsey added eight. Brandi Kinard posted 22 assists and Allie Donahue had 20 while Ashley Rineman contributed 22 digs.
In the nightcap, the Wariors c ame from behind with fourth and fifth-set wins, hitting better than .300 in each set to snag a 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 16-25, 25-18, 15-12) win over Dickinson. Lycoming improved to 4-1 overall while Dickinson dropped to 1-6.
Richardson led the Warriors with her first career double-double with 14 kills, 11 digs and three aces and both Oliva and McKillop added nine kills. Oliva added five blocks and McKillop also posted a double-double with 41 assists and 15 digs. Seibel added 17 digs and Whitehead posted a match-high 24 to go with two aces.
Emily Smith led the Devils with 22 kills and Jessie Shaffner posted 11 kills. Jenn Morrissey added 28 assists and Grace Morgan posted 15 digs. Both Emily Kisak and Laura Silverman posted three blocks.
The Warriors wrap up their time at the Dickinson Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they face Mich.-Dearborn at 11 a.m. and Penn State Altoona at 1 p.m.
