Warriors look to get River Derby Cup back on Thursday

Live Stats

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
– The Lycoming College women’s soccer team will look to win the River Derby Cup for the second time in the last three years when it faces rival Susquehanna University on Thursday night, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m., in the sixth annual trophy game.

The Warriors and Crusaders have played every year since 1994, but the River Derby was started in 2007 as a trophy game to compliment the men’s soccer version of the rivalry, the Battle of the Boot. In the first three meetings in the trophy game, the teams were never separated by more than one goal, with the 2007 and 2009 games both going into double overtime.

The Warriors posted a 4-0 win in 2010 as Kaitlin Horn ’11 tied a school record with all four goals in the contest, marking the largest margin in the series with the Crusaders since Susquehanna won the 2004 meeting between the teams, 5-0. The Crusaders answered with a 4-0 win to get the cup back in 2011, as sophomore Kate Wiley led the team with two goals.

In all, four of the last seven meetings between the squads have gone to overtime. The Warriors are 1-2 overall against the Crusaders at Sassafras Fields.

The Warriors (0-2 overall) fell to Juniata, 1-0, on Labor Day, Sept. 3. Juniata got a second-half goal to mark the margin of victory, but Lycoming’s defense played well all game, allowing just five of Juniata’s 16 shots to go on goal. Sophomore Sam Stropko (Sayre, Pa./Athens Area) has made 10 saves in the first two games.

The Crusaders (2-0 overall) are coming off a 1-0 overtime win over Cabrini on Friday, Aug. 31, and a 2-0 win over King’s on Saturday, Sept. 1. Three different players, Laura Buriak, Alexandra Mason and Wiley have scored for Susquehanna. Goalies Cameron Weaver and Rachel Norbuts have each posted three-save shutouts to start the season.
