Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) and senior
Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area) reached double-digit kills to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team, but a hot-hitting University of Scranton was able to post a 3-1 victory in non-conference action at Lamade Gym on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
The Warriors (8-4 overall) fought back in the third set, though, taking a 12-9 lead thanks to a 3-1 run. The Royals (11-4 overall) got the lead back at 18-17, but a kill by Oliva and an attack error by Scranton was followed by an ace from sophomore
Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area), helping Lycoming get the lead back. Scranton tied it at 22 again, but a sneak attack kill by junior
Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) was followed by a kill from Gear, giving the Warriors a 25-22 win.
The Warriors fell behind 4-0 in the fourth set and was down by five at 22-17, but fought back within a point at 23-22 after a kill on a dig attempt by McKillop. However, Scranton’s Julia Crilly and Michaela McCrudden notched kills to end the set with the Royals taking the win, 25-23.
The Royals broke open the first set with an 8-2 run to take an 18-10 lead en route to a 25-14 win. In the second set, the Royals used a 21-8 run after the set was tied at four to take a 25-12 win.
McKillop posted her seventh double-double of the season with 30 assists, 13 digs and four kills. Gear posted 11 kills and added four digs, two aces and two assists to lead the team while Oliva notched 10 kills while hitting .429, and she also added six digs. Freshman
Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York Area) added six kills to reach 100 in her career to go with eight digs and two blocks. Sutton finished with 10 digs.
Crilly posted 18 kills and 21 digs to lead the Royals and McFadden added 15 kills, four aces and 11 digs. Emily Keim posted 22 assists and eight digs and Juli Woods added 18 helpers and one block. Kristin Keegan also posted eight kills and three blocks, as Scranton hit .275 (60-19-149) during the match.
The Warriors get back on the court on Tuesday, Sept. 25, when they head to Albright for a 7 p.m. Commonwealth Conference match.
