Lycoming sweeps Wilkes tri-match

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior Shelby Gear (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) led the Lycoming College volleyball team with 25 kills on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 15, leading the team to a sweep of a tri-match at Wilkes University, beating Baptist Bible, 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-21), before downing Wilkes, 3-1 (26-24, 27-25, 16-25, 25-18).
 
Gear posed 12 kills and hit an outstanding .550 against Baptist Bible (6-5 overall) before adding 13 more kills in the win over Wilkes (4-9 overall). She also posted five blocks during the two matches, helping the Warriors improve to 8-3 overall.
 
Gear led the Warriors in the first match, while the team’s defense forced 24 Defender errors as Lycoming handled Baptist Bible in three sets.
 
Senior Jackie Oliva (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area) added eight kills, hitting .471, while the defense was led by sophomore Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon), who notched 17 digs. Freshman Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York Area) added 10 digs and two blocks and junior Cortney Tice (Canton, Pa./Canton) added seven digs.
 
Junior Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 31 assists and nine digs to go with two aces.
 
Jessica White, Emily Gordan and Jaycee Shirk led the Defenders with seven kills each, but the team struggled, hitting just .054 as a team. Hannah Rehm posted 26 assists and 14 digs.
 
Against Wilkes, the Warriors won two sets that went into extra points and closed it out in four sets to post its first 8-3 start since 2006.
 
Gear led the Warriors with 13 kills, 12 digs and three blocks and Richardson added 14 kills and 10 digs while McKillop posted a third double-double with 44 assists and 27 digs to go with two blocks. Oliva notched nine kills, five blocks and three digs. Tice notched 10 digs and Whitehead added 18 to go with three aces, while junior Chelsee Strine (South Boardman, Mich./Forest Area) posted five kills and nine digs.
 
Casey Bohan led the Colonels with 17 kills and Paige Trust also added 13. Erin Nothstein led the team with 25 digs and Megan Powers posted 40 assists and three digs.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Tuesday when they host Scranton in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. at Lamade Gym.
