WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – While the Lycoming College football team’s special teams efforts were impressive, with junior Zack Czap (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Oscelola) dropping two punts within the two-yard line and senior Parker Showers (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) approached a school record for kickoff return yards, The College at Brockport was able to roll up 503 yards en route to a 24-2 win in the MAC/NJAC Challenge at David Person Field on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Czap blasted six punts for an average of 35.2 yards, dropping three inside the 20-yard line and Showers had six kick returns for 149 yards, including a long of 41, to give him 914 career kick return yards. He passed Jason Davis (1996-99, 846) for second in the school’s career record book and moved within 83 yards of Ricky Lanetti’s school record of 987 set from 2000-03.

In his first career start, sophomore Tyler Jenny (Coalport, Pa./Glendale) completed 23-of-42 passes for 205 yards, but the Warriors finished with just 236 yards of offense while Brockport ran 85 plays for 503 yards to eat nearly 37 minutes of clock.

“They were better offensively and defensively than us,” Lycoming head coach Mike Clark said. “You have to be able to win two out of three phases to win a football game and they did.”

The Golden Eagles (1-0 overall) took control of the game in the first quarter when they embarked on a 19-play, 72-yard drive that took 9:03 off the clock, but a strong Lycoming stand ended the drive at the 14-yard line when sophomore Kody Flail (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) broke up a pass on third-and-goal to stop the drive and set up a 31-yard field goal from E.J. Genzano.

The Warriors used a strong kick return from Showers and a six-play drive to set up a punt that was downed at the 2-yard line. Backed into the end zone for an ensuing punt, the snap was mishandled out of bounds, giving Lycoming a safety and bringing the Warriors within 3-2 with 12:39 left in the second quarter.

Lycoming got another good return by Showers, as he got the ball to the Brockport 36-yard line and the Warriors went on an eight-play, 23-yard drive, but a missed field goal gave the Golden Eagles the ball at their own 20-yard line. It took them just three plays to score, as Joe Scibilia hit Joseph Innis on a 41-yard connection to help Brockport take a 10-2 lead into the half.

The Golden Eagles added two more scores in the third quarter, scoring on a 15-yard pass from Scibilia to Jake Spalik and a four-yard run by Tyrone Nichols.

“At halftime, it was a one score game,” Clark said. “We really needed to come out of the locker room and we talked about when opportunity presents itself, we have to be able to capitalize. They came out and won the third quarter. That was the difference in the game.”

Senior Jarrin Campman (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) led the Warrior receivers with seven catches for 43 yards and sophomore John Sibel (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) added six catches for a team-high 55 yards. Junior Matt Atkinson (Media, Pa./Penncrest) notched three catches for 47 yards and sophomore Cam Kriner (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery Area) also had three catches for 30 yards.

Scibilia finished 21-for-34 with two touchdowns, 324 yards and an interception. Andre Mrozek caught four passes for 99 yards and Spalik added five catches for 74 yards and a touchdowns. Nichols ran the ball 21 times for 103 yards and a score.

Defensively, Lycoming was led by 10 tackles, including one for a loss, and a breakup from junior Kabongo Bukasa (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park). Sophomore Kody Flail (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) added nine tackles and a breakup and sophomore Tanner Troutman (Hegins, Pa./Tri-Valley) posted seven tackles and an interception. Both senior Nate Oropollo (Aldan, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) and sophomore Jermaine Reyes (West New York, N.J./Memorial) recorded two tackles for loss and sophomore Kyle Sullivan (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) added a sack.

Brett Evensen led the Golden Eagles with nine tackles, three for a loss and one sack and John O’Hagan added seven tackles, one for a loss. Derek DeCandia added two pass breakups.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they head to No. 9 Delaware Valley for an important early season Middle Atlantic Conference matchup. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
