WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – No first-year program has ever come to Lycoming College with more impressive credentials than the Albright College men’s lacrosse team had entering Saturday, April 21’s Commonwealth Conference showdown at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. However, Lycoming used six goals and three assists from its senior class to lead it to an 11-7 win over league-leading Albright.
 
Using one of its most complete efforts of the season, the Warriors (5-7 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) had just 14 turnovers and posted an impressive 17-of-18 in clears as the transition game moved smoothly all day against the Lions (13-2 overall, 3-1 Commonwealth), who have already beaten two-time defending league champion Widener.
 
Senior captain Ethan Payne (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) led the Warriors with three goals and two assists on Senior Day, as he moved past Jim Cusick (2005-08) and moved into fifth in school history with 123 career goals.
 
The Warriors got on the board first, as senior Patrick Heagy (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) scored on an open weak side look on a dish from junior Stephen Romano (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township). The teams alternated goals throughout the rest of the first quarter, as Payne added a goal along with a transition goal from senior Hank Runser (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) on a give from senior Luke VanEmburg (Orefield, Pa./Parkland).
 
The Lions took the lead at 4-3 on a goal by Bryan Smith with 13:48 left in the second quarter, but the Warriors responded with a run of six straight goals, including four more before halftime, as freshman Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning Painted Post West) bookended the run with goals, the last coming with 2:09 left in the third quarter.
 
The Lions fought back into the game with three-straight man-up goals to close within 9-7 with 8:57 left, but senior Ben Walker (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) scored unassisted on a nifty goal with 7:09 left. A late man-up goal made up the final four-goal difference.
 
Reilly finished with two goals and two assists and sophomore Brett Farrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) added two assists. Romano posted a goal, an assist and three groundballs. Freshman Kyle Hauk (Sackets Harbor, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) posted four groundballs and two caused turnovers and both junior Matt Doherty (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) and senior Chris Petillo (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) added two caused turnovers, as the Warriors forced nine of Albright’s 15 miscues. Senior Tim Clemente (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) posted six groundballs.
 
Smith led the Lions with two goals and two assists and Dan Foote posted three goals. T.J. Holston posted a goal and two assists. Darian Meador posted seven groundballs and Smith added five more groundballs.
 
In net, sophomore Andrew Hauk (Sackets Harbor, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) made six saves in the win for the Warriors and Albright keeper Andrew Torak made nine stops.
 
In a game with 23 penalties (13 for Albright and 10 for Lycoming), extra-man opportunities were key, as Albright scored four man-up goals and Lycoming added three.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 25 when they host Messiah at 4 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
