ITHACA, N.Y. – An early three-goal lead wasn’t enough, as Ithaca College, which is receiving votes in the USILA Division III poll, scored all 13 of its goals in the last three quarters to snap the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team’s two-game win streak with a 13-8 win on Wednesday, March 7 at Higgins Stadium.
Sophomore
Brett Farrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) scored twice in the first quarter to help the Warriors (2-2 overall) to a 3-0 lead and fellow sophomore
Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) also added a man-up goal in the quarter.
However, in the second quarter, the Bombers (1-0 overall) scored four goals in a row, with Tom Mongelli scoring with 1:26 left in the half to give Ithaca a 4-3 lead. However, junior
Stephen Romano (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) responded 12 seconds later with an unassisted goal to tie the game at four heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Bombers scored twice to take a 6-4 lead before the Warriors answered back, with senior
Hank Runser (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and Romano answered back, tying the game at six with 8:34 left. However, Ithaca scored the next five goals to take an 11-6 lead and take control of the game. McCaffer and senior
Ethan Payne (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) added goals in the fourth quarter, but Ithaca closed the game with a pair of goals to round out the scoring.
Romano, Farrell and McCaffer each posted two goals, while Payne notched a goal and an assist and freshman
Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning Painted Post West) notched three helpers. Senior
Tim Clemente (Sayville, N.Y./West Sayville) led the team with nine groundballs and 13 faceoffs and senior
Victor Marchetti (Cortland, N.Y./Homer) added five groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Tom Mongelli led the Bombers with five goals and four groundballs and Connor Lowe added three goals and an assist. Devin Weinshank notched two goals, an assist and two caused turnovers and Brian DiBetta added six groundballs.
In goal, sophomore
Andrew Hauk (Sackets Harbor, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) notched 13 saves for the Warriors. Brendan Green stopped 15 shots in net for the Bombers to earn the win.
The Warriors return home on Saturday, March 10, when they host former Middle Atlantic Conference for King’s (Pa.) at 1 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
