Warriors fall in twinbill to Crusaders

READING, Pa. – The Lycoming College softball team posted 20 hits and scored nine runs during Saturday, March 31’s doubleheader at Alvernia, but the Crusaders posted a 12-1 win in the first game before notching a 9-8 walk-off win in the second in Commonwealth Conference action at Angelica Park.
 
In the second game, Felicia McKenna hit a two-RBI walk-off single with no outs to lead the Crusaders (18-2 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth) to a 9-8 win to secure the sweep.
 
The Warriors (5-13 overall, 0-4 Commonwealth) took an 8-7 lead with a four-run sixth inning, as freshman Kali Moeller (Frederickburg, Va./Chancellor) and junior Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) led off with singles before junior Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) singled in a run. Junior Brie Braga (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) followed with a single to load the bases before freshman Abbi Miller (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) singled to left center, driving in two runs to tie the game. After a fly ball and a walk, junior Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) singled to left field to bring in Braga with the game-tying run.
 
In the seventh inning, a leadoff walk and a double to left by Danielle Kitchen, setting up McKenna’s two-RBI single.
 
The Crusaders scored two runs on two hits in the first inning, but the Warriors responded in the second inning, as freshmen Kristin Steiner (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century) led off with walks before an fielder’s choice put runners at first and third. Junior Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) drilled a double to right-center to tie the game.
 
Lycoming took the lead in the third inning, Poorman singled with one out and pinch-running sophomore Samantha Gonzalez (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) reached second on a wild pitch before taking third on a single by Braga. After a pop-up, Steiner singled the runner in with a drive to left field.
 
The Crusaders tied the game in the bottom of the inning with the aid of a walk and two passed balls before Lycoming scratched a run across in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Marianelli led off with a  single, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by freshman Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity).
 
Alvernia took the lead back with four runs on six hits in the fifth, setting up the dramatic finish.
 
Poorman and Steiner each had two hits, a run and RBI and Braga posted two hits and a run. Marianelli notched two hits, two runs and a RBI for the Warriors, who pounded out 13 in the game.
 
Kitchen led the Crusaders with three hits, two runs and a RBI and McKenna also added three hits, a run and three RBI. Shannon Grim posted four runs and three RBI to go with two home runs.
 
Braga (2-7) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing four runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings. Deanna Dungee (6-1) earned the win for Alvernia, allowing three earned runs and four hits in four innings.
 
An eight-run second inning helped the Crusaders take control of the first game, as they scored in all four innings en route to the 12-1 win.
 
Lycoming scored its lone run in the fourth inning, when Poorman led off with a single, took second on an error with one out and scored on a single to left by Miller.
 
The Warriors posted seven hits, with two each coming from Miller and Marianelli. Miranda Peto led the Warriors with two hits, three runs and two RBI and Kitchen posted two hits and three RBI. McKenna and Samantha Penk each had two hits and two RBI.
 
Braga took the loss for the Warriors, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs in one-plus innings of work. Brittanie Wolfe (9-0) earned the win for the Crusaders, tossing five innings and allowing seven hits and no earned runs. She struck out two.
 
The Warriors get back in action on Thursday, April 5, when they head to Messiah for a Commonwealth Conference twinbill at 3 p.m.
