SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton rallied from down five runs to take a 6-5 decision in the nightcap and finish a sweep of the Lycoming College softball team on Monday evening, March 26, in non-conference action. The Royals posted a 6-0 win in the first game.
Lycoming (5-9 overall) jumped out to the lead in the third inning, as sophomore
Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) reached on a one-out error and then scored on a two-out single to center by junior
Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain).
In the fourth inning, the Warriors scored four more runs, as junior
Brie Braga (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) doubled down the right field line. After a sac bunt moved pinch-running freshman
Kali Moeller (Frederickburg, Va./Chancellor) moved to third, an error helped freshman
Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) reach and Moeller score. Junior
Bethany Garnand (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) followed with a single to left field and junior
Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch.
Cline followed with a single to left scoring one run, but a runner was cut down at home for the second out. However, the rally wasn’t over, as freshman
Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century) singled to left to score Marianelli before Cline scored on a balk to make it 5-0.
The Royals (10-2 overall) broke through in the sixth inning, scoring three runs on two hits and an error, with a two-RBI double from Megan Reilly providing the big blow in the inning. In the seventh inning, two singles and a walk loaded the bases, setting up an RBI single and a sac fly to tie the game before Tia Dimou’s sac fly ended the game.
Cline led the Warriors with two runs, a hit and a RBI, as the team posted six hits in the game. She became the sixth player in school history to score 65 career runs with her fourth inning run.
Ashley Vosilla and Reilly posted two hits for the Royals, with Reilly notching two RBI and a run.
Braga (2-4) tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs. She walked four and struck out two. Cynthia Leonard earned the win for the Royals, tossing 3 1/3 innings of relief and allowing one hit and three walks. She struck out three.
Christine Capalbo (6-0) led the Royals in the first game, tossing a complete-game seven-hitter to lead Scranton to a 6-0 win over Lycoming.
In the first inning, Scranton used four hits and a homer from Caitlin McHenry to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and added two more runs in the third on two more hits, a walk and a wild pitch.
Sophomore
Abbi Miller (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) led the Warriors with two of the team’s seven hits. McHenry led the Royals, posting three hits, two runs and two RBI.
Freshman
Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (1-1) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing six hits and six runs in 2 2/3 innings.
The Warriors host King’s (Pa.) on Wednesday, March 28, at 3 p.m. in a non-conference game at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
