NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –
Freshman Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) posted four hits, three RBI and tossed a complete game to help lift the Lycoming College softball team to a pair of wins at the National Collegiate Sports Invitational at Central Park on Tuesday, March 13, including the 300th win in school history, an 11-2 win over Principia in the morning before an 8-4 win over Eureka in the afternoon.

Lapano (1-0) earned the win In the first game by tossing a complete-game seven-hitter, allowing just one earned run and striking out seven while going 3-for-4 with three RBI at the dish. Lycoming (4-0 overall) scored runs in five frames, including posting seven in the first four innings to cruise to the win.

Junior Amy Cline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) led off the game with single to right center. After a sac bunt, she scored on a single to center field by junior Taylor Lesser (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain). Lesser scored on a two-out double by junior Brie Braga (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford).

In the second inning, junior Bethany Garnand (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) singled to left, took second on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single by Lapano. The Warriors tacked on another couple runs in the third, as freshman Kristen Steiner (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) walked and scored on an outfield error that helped sophomore Abbi Miller (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) reach. Garnand drove Miller in with a two-out RBI single. Lycoming expanded the lead to 7-0 in the fourth, as Cline reached on an error and moved to second on a single by Lapano. After a pair of outs, Braga drove Cline in with a single to left-center.

The Panthers (0-3 overall) got single runs back in the fourth and sixth, but Lapano left six runners stranded en route to the win and the Warriors closed out the game with a four-run seventh, as Miller led off with a single. Junior Amanda Conner (South Bound Brook, N.J./Somerset Vo-Tech) followed with a one-out single and sophomore Samantha Gonzalez (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) doubled down the line to drive in two runs before coming. A single by Cline and a stolen base put runners on second and third for Lapano, who wrapped a single up the middle to make up the final nine-run margin.

Cline went 2-for-5 with three runs and Lesser added two hits, a run and RBI. Braga went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, Garnand went 2-for-2 with a run and RBI and Gonzalez went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI.

Devon Harrison (0-1) took the loss for Principia, allowing 16 hits and seven earned runs. Thanda Kyaw went 2-for-4 with a run and Harrison also added two hits and a run.

In the nightcap, the Warriors waited until the fourth inning to break out the bats, scoring eight runs in three frames to overpower Eureka, 8-4, and stay perfect on the season. The freshman outfield duo of Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century) and Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) combined for four hits, a run and two RBI to lead the Warriors.

Down 1-0 in the fourth inning, the Warriors went to work, as Braga worked a walk to lead off and moved to second on a two-strike single by freshman Hannah Smith (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area). After a strikeout, a single to right field by Marianelli loaded the bases, where Nikki’s sister, junior Allyson Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) drove in a run with a single to center field. Junior Holly Lansberry (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville Area) continued the rally when she was hit by a pitch and a fielder’s choice drove in Nikki Marianelli.

Lycoming added two more runs in the fifth, as junior Janelle Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) drew a leadoff walk and a sac bunt and an error allowed Brie Braga to reach and pinch-runner Connor to take third. Braga stole second, setting up a one-out two-RBI single to right field by Pugh.

In the sixth, Lycoming continued to rally, as pinch-hitters, Lapano and Garnand led off with singles. After a fly out, Braga singled in a run with a single to right field and a wild pitch pushed another run across. A sac fly by Smith helped give Lycoming an 8-1 lead.

The Red Devils (0-3 overall) rallied late in the game, scoring three runs in the seventh inning, as Sara Hamilton homered to left-center field. However, Braga entered with runners on first and second and one out and got the last two batters to ground out for her second career save.

Hamilton led Eureka, going 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Braga scored twice for the Warriors and both Pugh and Marianelli had two hits.

Lansberry (2-0) earned the win for the Warriors, allowing six hits and four earned runs while walking seven and striking out five. Sarah Jesse took the loss, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs in six innings. She struck out two.
