Warriors comeback falls short to Pride

Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College women’s basketball team outscored Widener by 14 points in the second half, but Widener sustained a late run by the Warriors to take a 74-66 Commonwealth Conference win on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 11, to earn a slot in the conference championship.
 
Sophomore Julia Antonelli (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) posted 16 points and two steals and junior Rachael Scheller (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) added 10 points, four steals and two assists to lead the Warriors (10-12 overall, 5-7 Commonwealth).
 
Lycoming and Widener (15-7 overall, 8-3 Commonwealth) fought through four lead changes and three ties in the first 14 minutes of the game, as Lycoming took a lead as big as four points at 15-11 with 8:56 left. However, Widener took the lead with six straight points before a layup by freshman Kylee Sutton (Wysox, Pa./Towanda Area) tied the game at 17.
 
Widener then closed the half on a 26-4 run, as they scored three straight fastbreak buckets to start the run.
 
In the second half, Widener got the lead to as many as 28 points, holding a 63-35 advantage with 9:29 left, but the Warriors fought back with a 31-11 run in the final moments. Lycoming cut the lead to into single digits with 40 seconds left, as senior Erin Connaghan (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) converted a traditional 3-point play to make it 71-62.
 
Connaghan and freshman Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) each notched nine points, as Connaghan also added four assists. Freshman Kat Andriani (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) added six points and eight rebounds.
 
Lil Carney posted 20 points, five rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks to lead the Pride while Ally Ferrucci chipped in 13 points and six assists. Kate Dellinger posted nine points and seven steals.
 
The Warriors hit the road for the last time in the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 14, when they head to Elizabethtown for a 7 p.m. game. The game will be the last regular-season home game in the career of Elizabethtown’s head coach Yvonne Kauffman, who is in her 42nd year on the Blue Jays’ bench.
