WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior
Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) posted 22 points to lead the Lycoming College men’s basketball team, but Lamar Jackson scored on a second-chance layup with 1.0 second left to lift Widener to a 70-69 win over the Warriors on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Lamade Gym in Commonwealth Conference action.
Lycoming (17-6 overall, 7-5 Commonwealth) led the game from the 19:07 mark of the first half when freshman
Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring until Jackson’s layup led to the only lead change in the contest, as Widener (17-6 overall, 8-4 Commonwealth) moved into second place alone in the conference.
The Warriors opened the game with two 3-pointers from Dougher en route to a 21-7 opening run, as sophomore
Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) hit a layup with 11:07 left in the half. The Pride worked to get the lead down for the rest of the half, cutting it to four with 3:35 left, but a fastbreak bucket by Martin helped Lycoming close the half on an 8-5 run, taking a 39-32 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Pride kept working to cut into the lead, moving within two points at 48-46 with 12:13 left, but the Warriors responded with nine straight points, four from Martin and three from Anthony to take an 11-point lead with 9:33 left.
A jumper by senior
Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) gave Lycoming a 67-59 lead with 4:47 left, but Widener closed the game on a 13-2 run, as Lycoming hit just two free throws the rest of the way.
Anthony finished with 16 points and eight rebounds and Dougher finished with 11 points. Junior
Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensberg) notched four points, a career-high 12 rebounds, two steals and a block and Bradley posted six points, five rebounds, four assists, four blocks and two steals. Freshman
Chris Foreman (Union, N.J./Union) added six points and four rebounds.
The Pride held a 53-40 advantage on the glass, including 20 offensive rebounds, helping make up for shooting just 33 percent (23-for-69) from the floor while Lycoming shot 42 percent (29-of-69). The Pride also hit 18 free throws.
Perry Wright finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds and Jack Brennan posted 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Pride. Rob McPherson added six points and 11 rebounds and Jackson posted 13 points and four assists. Brian Smith notched eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.
The Warriors hit the road for the last time in the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 14, when they head to Elizabethtown for a 5 p.m. game.
