WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Shooting a season-high 55 percent from the field and led by a career-high 28 points from senior
Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King), the hot Lycoming College men’s basketball team won its sixth straight game on Saturday, Dec. 8, downing Arcadia University, 90-72, in Commonwealth Conference action.
“The guys played very well defensively,” Lycoming College head coach
Guy Rancourt, whose team held the Knights to just 35 percent from the floor. “They locked in on their assignments and they did what they were supposed to do. I was very happy with what they did (Saturday).”
The Warriors (7-1 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth) were led by Martin’s career-high tally, as he shot 12-of-20 from the field and added four free throws. He did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 19 in the stanza. He also blocked two shots.
Senior
Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensburg) continued his march toward the Middle Atlantic Conference record for career assists, posting 14 dimes against the Knights (4-3 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) to come within 15 of the conference record of 668 set by Mike Rhoads of Lebanon Valley from 1992-95. He also had five steals to move within 12 of the top 25 in NCAA Division III history.
Lycoming jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the first 3:20 of the game, as Martin offered up six points and the Warriors kept the foot on the gas, with a 3-pointer from sophomore
Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) with 11:59 left in the first giving Lycoming a 23-6 advantage.
The Knights got the lead to single figures with 54 seconds left in the half, as a jumper by Travis Saltus made it 41-32, but the Warriors scored the last three points of the half, with junior
Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) tipping in a layup at the buzzer.
The Warriors never let the Knights within nine points in the second half and a 20-2 run that was capped with a layup by junior
Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) with 11:05 left gave them a 27-point lead to seal the win, as the Knights never got closer than 17 points and that was with 3:04 left.
Four Warriors finished in double figures for the sixth straight game, as sophomore
Chris Foreman (Union, N.J./Union) added 11 points, three rebounds and two assists, Anthony finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double, and senior
Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) added 10 points, three rebounds and three assists. Ten Warriors figured into the scoring, as the Warriors shot a furious 61.3 percent from the field in the second half.
Arcadia was led by 13 points, two steals and five assists from Aaron Lee-Webb and 12 points each from Joseph Brown and Saltus. Brown led the Knights with eight rebounds. Rashon Brock also added two steals.
The Warriors scored 31 points on the break and 54 points in the paint during the win while allowing just 30 points in the paint and 10 on the break.
The Warriors get back on the court on Friday, Dec. 14, when they face Messiah in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader. The women face the No. 8 Falcons at 2 p.m. and the men will face off in a 4 p.m. rematch of the 2012 Commonwealth Conference championship game.
